Point Pleasant

A neighbourhood sub shop and the employee who bought it.

Jersey Mike’s Subs traces itself to 1956 and a sandwich shop in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a few blocks from the beach town of Point Pleasant Beach. English Wikipedia says the shop was originally named Mike’s Giant Submarine Shop after its owner, Michael Ingravallo, who with his wife Marie ran several shops in New Jersey and Florida as part of her family’s business. Wikipedia says Marie’s father, Jimmy Lepore, came to the United States from Caserta, Italy, in 1922 and opened a submarine shop on Tremont Avenue in the Bronx before the family moved to New Jersey and built up a string of sub shops along the coast.

The figure who turned the shop into a chain started behind its counter. Wikipedia says Peter Cancro, who grew up in Point Pleasant Beach, took a part-time job in 1971 at what was then called Mike’s Submarines. When the shop came up for sale again in 1975, his mother suggested he buy it, and he raised the money with the help of his high-school football coach, who also worked as a banker. Nation’s Restaurant News gave the same account in July 2026, describing Cancro as a high-school student who bought a tiny sub shop with a loan from his football coach, and in November 2024 it reported that he had served as chief executive since 1975.

Wikipedia says Cancro began franchising in 1987, and that the original shop is still used as a training centre for the company. In November 2024 Nation’s Restaurant News described Jersey Mike’s as a company that prides itself on being a training business. Wikipedia records restaurants opened in Queensland, Australia, from March 2016 and closed by late 2020, a mall location in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2021, and a Canadian expansion with the operator Redberry Restaurants announced in January 2024, starting with restaurants in Ontario.

Blackstone, a new chief executive and a stock listing.

On 19 November 2024 Nation’s Restaurant News reported that the private-equity firm Blackstone would acquire a majority ownership position in Jersey Mike’s, with Cancro keeping a significant equity stake and continuing to lead the business. The trade paper said the partnership was meant to help the chain expand across and beyond the United States and to continue its technology and digital work. Wikipedia dates the announcement to 18 November 2024 and says the transaction completed in early 2025; Nation’s Restaurant News reported in July 2026 that Blackstone acquired the chain in January 2025.

Leadership changed after the sale. Wikipedia says Cancro was succeeded as chief executive by Charlie Morrison on 28 April 2025, and Nation’s Restaurant News reported that Blackstone brought Morrison in, noting that he had previously taken Wingstop public. In July 2026 the same publication reported that Jersey Mike’s had priced an initial public offering and was scheduled to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker JMKE. It said Cancro remained involved as a significant shareholder and as master franchise operator for the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The paper described the company in July 2026 as based in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, while English Wikipedia gives its headquarters as Manasquan, New Jersey.

The menu still turns on the original shop’s format. Wikipedia says each restaurant slices meats and cheeses to order, as the 1956 store did, and that ordering a sub “Mike’s Way” tops it with onions, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, oregano, salt and a blend of red wine vinegar and oils that the company calls “The Juice”. It also records a chopped pepper relish known as “CPR”, and breakfast sandwiches at some locations made with pork roll, a New Jersey product.

Design and documentation.

A sandwich shop has a short list of surfaces on which its identity can live. Outside, there is the sign over the door and, in many cases, a window or a pole sign that has to be read from a moving car. Inside, there is the menu board behind the counter, which carries the name, the colours and the type all at once, and which has to stay legible while prices and items change around it.

The rest of the identity travels with the food. Sandwiches are wrapped in printed paper or foil, slipped into bags, stacked into boxes for catering and handed over with cups and napkins, so a chain’s name and pattern leave the shop on objects that are thrown away within the hour. Ordering slips, stickers and receipts carry it too.

Each guide in this group looks at one sandwich or sub chain through those surfaces: where the business started and who founded it, who has owned it since, and how its name, logo, signage and packaging are described in sources that can be dated. Where a fact rests only on the company’s own account, the guide says so.

Jersey Mike’s

A place name, a shore story and a local actor.

The Jersey Mike’s name pairs the state with the original shop’s owner, and its advertising has returned to the shore where the shop opened. On 12 September 2022, Fast Casual reported, the company launched a national campaign called “It’s A Jersey Mike’s Thing” starring the actor Danny DeVito, an Asbury Park native who grew up down the street from the original shop. Chief marketing officer Rich Hope said in the company’s release that the campaign was about the subs being sliced and grilled fresh to order, and noted that New Jersey marks an official Danny DeVito Day. The spots also cast real Jersey Mike’s crew members making sandwiches.

The campaign was the debut of the brand’s creative agency of record, Highdive, an independent agency based in Chicago. In February 2023 Nation’s Restaurant News reported that the agency had slipped a DeVito spot into its pitch, and that Hope had found humour new territory for a chain that had tended to take a conservative approach. Hope told the paper that the star of the ads was the fresh grilling and fresh slicing, with DeVito delivering the message.

Charity and sport carry the name as well. The same report described the Month of Giving, a campaign held each March to raise money for local charities, which returned in 2021, and said the company sponsored the Special Olympics USA Games in 2022. In November 2024 Nation’s Restaurant News described an annual Day of Giving, when participating stores give the day’s sales to a local charity. The 2023 report also listed college sports partnerships begun in 2014, an NHL sponsorship signed in January 2023, and live music performances on the Jersey Mike’s trailer at festivals.

For a design guide, Jersey Mike’s shows how a sub shop can make a state name, a shore-town origin story and a locally born actor into one consistent voice, while the counter routine of “Mike’s Way” stays the same. Compare it with Subway and Potbelly. For this guide we use shore navy, sub red and deli paper with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
