Made in Portugal

Jossois is a Portuguese family manufacturer making umbrellas and parasols in Portugal since 1976.

Jossois is a lesson in genuine domestic manufacture as the identity. A northern-Portuguese family firm founded in 1976, it actually makes umbrellas and parasols in Portugal — printing, cutting, sewing and assembling in its own factory — for terraces, pools and hospitality, fully customisable, the café parasols that carry a beverage brand’s name. Its answer to how a place makes the umbrella is a manufacturer’s: it is the umbrella beneath the brand, and it is really made in Portugal. An umbrella, made where it says.

Its identity is the made-in-Portugal manufacturer. Jossois’ own factory, its Portuguese production and its customisable range are the work it is known for. A capability, made a signature. A family firm that still runs the machines at home.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Jossois — Jossois, Indústria & Comércio de Guarda Sóis, Lda — was founded in 1976 by Almerinda Araújo Oliveira and Joaquim Oliveira Pereira, and is run today by their son José Pereira with the next generation, an independent, multi-generation family business, with headquarters in Braga and a factory in Soutelo, Vila Verde, in northern Portugal. It is genuinely made in Portugal: a real factory that prints, cuts, sews, assembles and inspects in house, not a rebadged importer. It is a business-to-business and personalisation manufacturer rather than a consumer fashion label, so the honest story is where the umbrella is actually made. It should not be confused with Portuguese importers, with the Spanish house Ezpeleta, or with the New-Zealand brand Blunt. Its designs and logo are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Jossois lives in an azulejo-blue palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Jossois’ identity is practical, Portuguese and honest — an azulejo blue, an ink, a cloud grey, a pine, and a chalk. The palette leans azulejo blue and grey: the register of a Portuguese maker and a terrace parasol under a clear sky. It signals manufacture and place over show. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is an azulejo-blue palette signals a practical, Portuguese identity. Jossois’ world is a genuinely-made, customisable, made-in-Portugal object. For designers, it is a reminder that a Portuguese blue and a cloud grey can carry a brand built on real manufacture — the blue of an azulejo tile and the grey of an overcast terrace. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: actually make it; keep the factory at home; let honesty about production be the story; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is an industrial sans — clean, even, functional.

Jossois’ identity carries a clean, even, functional spirit — a maker’s object, not a fashion one. An industrial sans captures the mood: neutral, technical and legible, the register of a working factory. Set in an azulejo-blue palette, the industrial sans feels clean and even — exactly the personality Jossois carries. It is functional rather than showy, mirroring a customisable, made-to-order umbrella. (Jossois’ real designs and wordmark are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “an industrial-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the maker: clean, even and functional.

The umbrella around the world

Jossois stands for the made-in-Portugal manufacturer.

Jossois is a lesson in making genuine manufacture the identity. An azulejo-blue palette, an industrial sans and a customisable range make one thing — a family firm that really makes in Portugal — the whole maker: practical, Portuguese and honest. The manufacture is the differentiator. The differentiator is a real factory: printing, cutting, sewing and assembling at home, in a category where most “brands” only import and print a logo.

Put to work, the identity is manufacture as design. A maker building in this spirit would keep genuine production capability, make where it claims, and let honesty about the factory be the story rather than a fashion image, so the customer buys a truly made object. It would treat the personalisation service as the point — the umbrella beneath a hundred other brands. It would name its Portuguese factory plainly. The lesson Jossois teaches is that manufacture itself can build a brand: the factory gives it capability, and the Portuguese making gives it credibility. The manufacture is the personality, and the factory is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Jossois holds the made-at-home industry pole in this round about the umbrella around the world: actually make it, and let that be the brand. The lessons: keep the factory; make where you say; be honest about production; and never reproduce a protected design. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Jossois is an independent, multi-generation Portuguese manufacturer founded in 1976, making umbrellas and parasols in Vila Verde, Portugal — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Jossois made the manufacture the maker — proof that really making it can be the difference.

Editorial reference. This article reports publicly documented facts about Jossois’ visual identity as design commentary; it is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Jossois, Lda, and it does not promote the purchase or use of any product. The Jossois name, wordmark and its designs are trademarks/works of their owner — the graphics here are original abstract homages (colour discs and canopy-texture swatches); no umbrella or wordmark is reproduced, and all specimen text is set in a Google-Font stand-in. Facts reported from public sources (jossois.com): Jossois is an independent, family-run Portuguese umbrella and parasol manufacturer (founded 1976 by Almerinda Araújo Oliveira and Joaquim Oliveira Pereira; run today by José Pereira; headquarters in Braga, factory in Soutelo, Vila Verde). Honest notes: it is genuinely made in Portugal in its own factory (printing, cutting, sewing, assembly), a business-to-business and personalisation manufacturer; it is distinct from Portuguese importers, from the Spanish house Ezpeleta, and from the New-Zealand brand Blunt. No official brand hex is published, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.
