The Köhlmoos brothers

An aluminium frame, a lid with a light, and a family company.

JUWEL Aquarium is a family company from Rotenburg (Wümme), a town in Lower Saxony between Bremen and Hamburg, and its own chronicle starts before its founding. The company says the Köhlmoos brothers built an aquarium with an aluminium frame in 1966, at a time when tanks were usually held in enamelled steel angle frames, and in 1968 an aquarium with an integral lid that housed its lighting.

The business was formally founded in 1969, when, the company says, the brothers registered JUWEL Aquarium GmbH & Co. KG in the commercial register. The chronicle then follows a run of construction changes: silicone bonding in place of filler in 1970; a waterproof cover light in 1982, which the company says carried the GS safety mark from TÜV Rheinland; aquariums without side profiles, held instead by plastic upper and lower frames, in 1984; and in 1990 a complete aquarium with an integrated heater, the company’s patented filter system and lighting.

That last step became the brand’s idea. On its “About us” page the company says it placed the emphasis on a systems concept “right from the start,” developing the equipment an aquarium needs so that every component fits the others. In 1995, its chronicle says, JUWEL moved into new premises in Rotenburg and set up its own subsidiary in England; in 2014 it added a production and logistics hall at the Rotenburg site.

From metal frames to clean-lined cabinets.

The magazine Practical Fishkeeping, in a nostalgic look back at the brand illustrated with its early system aquariums, recalled the very early JUWEL models with metal frames and metal stands, and the Delta 100 corner aquarium. It also noted a change in how the tanks are made: these days they are built by robots, the magazine wrote, whereas most of the tanks in the early years were built by women. The company itself now describes “robot-supported production” in Rotenburg.

JUWEL’s product names are short and easy to remember. The Vision aquarium, presented in 1998, had a curved front pane, the company says. Today’s range, as listed on its website, includes the Rio, Lido, Vision and Trigon aquariums, the Primo and the compact Vio, sold in several sizes. Each size is named by its volume in litres — the Rio runs from the Rio 125 to the Rio 450 — so the number on the box describes the tank. Practical Fishkeeping’s retrospective credited JUWEL with helping to move the hobby over to metric sizes and volumes.

In 2016, the chronicle says, JUWEL introduced a new SBX design for all its Rio, Lido, Vision and Trigon cabinets, emphasising the “timeless look” of its aquariums with clear lines. Three years earlier, in 2013, it had strengthened the brand through what it calls a modernised market presence and stronger product packaging. Lighting changed too, by its own account: electronic ballasts arrived in 1999, T5 tubes replaced T8 in 2006, and its MultiLux LED units replaced T5 in 2017.

The seven brands in this group are all aquarium and pond names: Fluval, Juwel, Seachem, Hikari, OASE, EHEIM and API. Aquarium and pond brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger pet care groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a specialist aquatics shop to a general pet store.

An aquarium brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a name, a logo and the look of its packs, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its tanks, filters, foods or treatments are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

JUWEL

Still a Köhlmoos company.

JUWEL has remained in family hands. The company’s imprint names it today as JUWEL Aquarium AG & Co. KG, a limited partnership based in Rotenburg, whose general partner is JUWEL Aquarium Verwaltungs AG. The management board it lists includes Gerd Köhlmoos and Katharina Köhlmoos, alongside Jannis Seemann, and the chair of the supervisory board is Annemarie Köhlmoos. The company’s legal form has therefore changed since the GmbH & Co. KG of 1969, though its chronicle does not date the change.

The company’s own pages give its age differently: its “About us” page now speaks of 60 years of aquarium making, counting from the 1960s, while the chronicle dates the formal founding to 1969. The name itself is a plain German word — Juwel means jewel — and the company writes it in capitals, as JUWEL, and in full as JUWEL Aquarium; its website is juwel-aquarium.de.

The company’s chronicle traces the same idea through each decade: the lid with built-in lighting of 1968, the complete aquarium with heater, filter and light of 1990, and the redesigned cabinets of 2016. On its safety page, JUWEL says its technical products are tested and certified by the German TÜV, and that its frame construction is patented. The cabinets of its Rio, Lido, Vision, Trigon, Vio and Primo ranges in the SBX design carry the GS “Tested Safety” mark, awarded by the DIM institute in Rosenheim, the company says.

Where the aquariums are made is stated plainly by the company. Its “About us” page places its robot-supported production in Rotenburg (Wümme), Germany, where, according to its chronicle, it moved into new premises in 1995 and added a production and logistics hall in 2014.

For a design guide, JUWEL shows how a manufacturer can make a whole system, not a single product, the face of its brand. Compare EHEIM, another German aquarium maker, and Fluval, the Hagen Group’s aquarium brand from Montreal. For this guide we use a deep blue, aluminium grey and cabinet black with a technical sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
