Kiss the Hippo Brand Guidelines
The red hippo.

Two constants: a hippo-red-and-beech palette and a clean geometric register. Abstract homage — not the Kiss the Hippo packaging.
The red hippo
Kiss the Hippo’s ownable device is a single red hippo.
Kiss the Hippo is a lesson in one ownable emblem. Founded in 2018 by Can Eren in London (first café and roastery in Richmond), it is an independent, founder-led roaster built around a strong sustainability story — from a low-fuel Loring roaster to a “carbon-negative” positioning certified by the non-profit On A Mission.
Its brand identity is a red hippo. The trademark-level red hippo emblem, paired with the tongue-in-cheek name, is the ownable device that carries across bags, merch and signage. The wider system is clean, minimalist and premium, with cafés built from natural materials — laser-cut steel, beech wood, slatted timber — so the one bold red hippo pops against neutral, woody tones. The branding and interiors were created by the London studio DesignLSM.
(Honest notes: the branding/interiors are by DesignLSM — not Ragged Edge, a mistaken attribution — though the hippo’s individual illustrator isn’t credited. The carbon claim evolved from “neutral” (a 2020 goal) to “negative” (later, certified), so we attribute the superlative to the company. And there’s no official brand hex, so the tones here are an unofficial interpretation.)

Kiss the Hippo’s identity is warm, natural and premium — an ink, a hippo red, a beech, a sage, and a cream. The palette pairs a bold hippo red with warm beech and sage — the register of a red emblem against natural materials. It signals warmth and quality rather than clinical minimalism. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a bold red on natural neutrals signals a warm, premium brand. Kiss the Hippo’s world is a red hippo against wood and steel. For designers, it is a reminder that one bold accent against warm neutrals reads as premium and human — right for a mascot-led, natural-material identity. The takeaways: pick one ownable emblem; keep the ground natural and warm; let the emblem be the only loud note; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using ink for small text so the hippo leads.
Typography
The register is a clean geometric — warm, premium, contemporary.
Kiss the Hippo’s identity carries a warm, premium, contemporary spirit — a playful emblem and natural materials. A clean geometric sans captures the mood: it is modern and calm, the register of a premium, minimalist brand. Set in a red-and-beech palette, the clean geometric feels warm and premium — exactly the personality Kiss the Hippo carries. It is contemporary rather than fussy, mirroring a natural-material café. (Kiss the Hippo’s real emblem and packaging are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typefaces are not ours to use.) Because they are not ours to use, the honest description is “a clean geometric spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: warm, premium and contemporary.

An emblem as identity
Kiss the Hippo stands for one red hippo you remember.
Kiss the Hippo is a lesson in making an emblem the identity. A red-and-beech palette, a clean geometric and a single red hippo make one mascot the whole brand — warm, premium, memorable. The hippo is the differentiator. The differentiator is a mascot-led, natural-material, premium identity.
For designers and brand-builders, Kiss the Hippo offers a clear takeaway: one emblem can carry a brand. The lessons: choose a single ownable device (the red hippo); keep everything else natural and calm so it pops; and let a studio unify branding and space (DesignLSM). It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it was founded in 2018, the carbon claim evolved from neutral to negative, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Kiss the Hippo made an emblem the brand — proof that one mascot can be the difference.
