Bondi, in an optical brand

Bailey Nelson gave affordable optical a design toolkit.

Bailey Nelson is a lesson in giving a retail chain a real identity. Founded in 2012 at Bondi Beach, Sydney by Nick Perry and Peter Winkle — starting at the Bondi Markets — it has grown to around 120 stores across Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It remains independent and founder-controlled.

Its identity is a 2022 rebrand by the Australian studio Accompany (with Bailey Nelson’s internal team). The documented system is exactly what a brand-guidelines piece dissects: a re-imagined wordmark applied across signage, point-of-sale and product, plus a toolkit of typography, colour, photography and illustration. It is an accessible, approachable, coastal-Australian identity — designed to make an optometry-and-eyewear retail chain feel like a brand.

(Honest notes: it was founded in 2012 by Nick Perry and Peter Winkle. It is independent and founder-controlled — 2026 talk of a “growth partner” is explicitly not a sale. The identity is by studio Accompany (2022), with an in-house team. And it is fundamentally an optometry/eyewear retail chain, not a fashion label. There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

Bailey Nelson lives in a coastal-teal-and-coral palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Bailey Nelson’s identity is friendly, approachable and coastal — an ink, a teal, a coral, a sand, and a cloud. The palette pairs a coastal teal with a warm coral — the register of an accessible, Bondi-born optical brand. It signals warmth and approachability rather than luxury. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a coastal teal plus warm coral signals friendly approachability. Bailey Nelson’s world is an easy, sunny optical shop. For designers, it is a reminder that warm, coastal colour reads as welcoming and unintimidating — right for accessible eyewear on the high street. The takeaways: keep it warm and approachable; build a full toolkit (type, colour, photography, illustration); apply it consistently across retail; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a friendly sans — warm, approachable, clear.

Bailey Nelson’s identity carries a warm, approachable, clear spirit — a coastal palette and an easy manner. A friendly sans captures the mood: it is open and welcoming, the register of accessible retail. Set in a coastal-teal-and-coral palette, the friendly sans feels warm and approachable — exactly the personality Bailey Nelson carries. It is welcoming rather than exclusive, mirroring a Bondi-born optical brand. (Bailey Nelson’s real wordmark and Accompany’s toolkit are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a friendly sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: warm, approachable and clear.

Approachability as identity

Bailey Nelson stands for optical made warm and easy.

Bailey Nelson is a lesson in making approachability the identity. A coastal-teal-and-coral palette, a friendly sans and a full toolkit make an easy, welcoming feel the whole brand — warm, accessible, consistent. The approachability is the differentiator. The differentiator is a coastal, toolkit-driven, retail identity.

For designers and brand-builders, Bailey Nelson offers a clear takeaway: a retail chain deserves a real system. The lessons: build a proper toolkit (wordmark, type, colour, photography, illustration); keep it warm and approachable; and apply it consistently across every store. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s founder-controlled (not sold), the studio is Accompany (2022), and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Bailey Nelson made approachability the brand — proof that a warm, consistent system can be the difference.

Its identity is a 2022 rebrand by the Australian studio Accompany (with its internal team): a re-imagined wordmark across signage, point-of-sale and product, plus a toolkit of typography, colour, photography and illustration; an accessible, coastal-Australian identity for an optometry-and-eyewear retail chain.
