Covina, 1984

Two co-founders, one club and a regional name.

LA Fitness was co-founded in 1984 by Chinyol Yi and Louis Welch. A Fitness International statement published by the Health & Fitness Association in September 2023 says Welch co-founded the brand in Southern California and that, under Yi and Welch, the company grew from a single location. Athletech News reported the same history on 21 September 2023, naming Welch as co-founder, president and co-chief executive of the parent company, Fitness International, LLC, and Yi as executive chairman. English Wikipedia places the first club in Covina, and dates the founding to 1 November 1984.

Wikipedia says the business grew over its first decade by acquiring other gyms in Southern California and that in 1995 it introduced a large-format club design.

That design has stayed central to how the company describes itself. In its 2023 statement, Fitness International called Welch “a driving force behind the LA Fitness signature design model”. Wikipedia describes LA Fitness clubs as including full-size basketball courts, lap pools, racquetball courts, saunas and steam rooms. The Mercury News, writing about the group’s City Sports Club brand in February 2013, listed a similar mix at its San Jose clubs: cardio equipment with individual screens, free weights, a lap pool, indoor cycling with stadium seating and full basketball courts.

The company has remained privately held. Wikipedia names Irvine, California, as the headquarters of Fitness International, the legal entity behind the LA Fitness trade name, and records that the private-equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners bought a minority stake in May 2007.

Acquisitions, conversions and a family of club brands.

Much of the LA Fitness story is told through clubs that began under other names. Wikipedia lists a run of purchases that were converted to the LA Fitness brand or folded into the group: Australian Body Works in the Atlanta area in June 2000; clubs in Toronto in 2007, the company’s step into Canada; Pure Fitness locations in the Phoenix area in 2010; clubs from Bally Total Fitness in November 2011; Lifestyle Family Fitness in Florida, agreed in June 2012; and the Buffalo and Rochester Athletic Clubs in western New York, announced in December 2013.

The group also began to run more than one brand. The Mercury News reported in February 2013 that the first City Sports Club had held its grand opening in San Jose in October 2012, and that City Sports Club was part of the Fitness International group alongside LA Fitness and Lifestyle Family Fitness. Wikipedia says those first City Sports Club locations were existing LA Fitness facilities given the new name. In January 2020, according to Wikipedia, Fitness International introduced Esporta Fitness by rebranding LA Fitness clubs in the Phoenix area; by 2023 both the Health & Fitness Association statement and Athletech News listed Esporta Fitness among the company’s four brands, and Wikipedia says the company began winding the Esporta name down in 2024, returning most of those clubs to the LA Fitness name.

A premium tier followed. Athletech News reported in February 2023 on Club Studio, a concept that opened in the Oak Creek shopping centre in Irvine and combines boutique-style class rooms with a gym floor, a pool, a basketball court, a recovery area, a juice bar and a retail store. The trade site said Welch, as president and co-chief executive, operated Club Studio alongside LA Fitness.

The pattern of acquiring and renaming continued. On 16 July 2024 Athletech News reported that Fitness International had acquired XSport Fitness, with clubs in New York, the Chicago area and Virginia, and that it would rebrand them under its own names; it quoted Jill Greuling, president of club operations. Wikipedia also records a 2022 partnership with Xponential Fitness that placed Club Pilates and StretchLab studios inside LA Fitness and City Sports Club locations, and a 2026 pilot of an AI-assisted basketball court system from Shoot 360. In August 2025, Wikipedia notes, the Federal Trade Commission sued Fitness International over its membership cancellation practices, allegations the company disputed.

Typography

Design and documentation.

A gym or fitness-studio brand reaches people through spaces as much as through screens, so its identity has to work on a wide range of surfaces. Exterior signage is often the first contact: a fascia or illuminated sign has to read from across a car park or a busy street, which tends to favour a short wordmark, a simple symbol and a colour that holds up at night. Inside, the brand moves onto walls, floor graphics, wayfinding, locker areas and reception desks, where tone of voice and typography carry as much weight as the logo itself.

Lighting is a design tool in this category. Some studios use coloured light to set a mood for a class, while others favour bright, even light and pale finishes; either way, the chosen light changes how the brand colour looks in person. Apparel and merchandise extend the identity onto staff uniforms, towels, bottles and bags, so marks need to survive embroidery, single-colour print and small sizes. Apps and booking tools add another layer, translating the palette and type into icons, buttons and class schedules on a phone. A consistent system ties these touchpoints together without forcing every location to look identical.

LA Fitness

A place name, a club format and sister brands.

The LA Fitness identity combines a place name with a club format. The initials point back to the Los Angeles region where Yi and Welch began, and the format — courts, pools and large open floors — is what the company itself calls its signature design model. Under one parent, City Sports Club, Club Studio and, for a time, Esporta Fitness have each carried their own names over the doors.

Renaming is a recurring act in the company’s history. Clubs bought from Australian Body Works, Bally Total Fitness, Lifestyle Family Fitness and XSport Fitness took on Fitness International brands, and LA Fitness clubs themselves became City Sports Club and Esporta Fitness locations before, in Esporta’s case, many returned to the LA Fitness name.

For a design guide, LA Fitness shows how a short regional name can be carried by a single club format across many cities, while a parent company runs sister brands for other tiers of the market. Compare it with 24 Hour Fitness, another California gym chain that grew from a single club in the 1980s, and Equinox, the club brand that Athletech News named as a competitor when Club Studio opened. For this guide we use court blue, sign red and locker white with a tall sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
