Malin+Goetz Brand Guidelines
A modern New York apothecary — minimalist design, one bold accent per product.

Two constants: a white-and-grapefruit palette and a clean grotesque. Abstract homage — not the Malin+Goetz wordmark or logo.
Two apothecaries, two disciplines
Malin+Goetz merged beauty and design.
Malin+Goetz is a lesson in two disciplines meeting. It was founded in 2004 in Chelsea, Manhattan, by the couple Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz — Malin from luxury beauty (Barneys, and global sales development at Kiehl’s), Goetz from design (about a decade as a director at the Swiss furniture house Vitra). That pairing — a beauty insider and a design mind — defines the brand.
It positions itself as a modern apothecary: unisex, gender-neutral skincare, grooming and fragrance that is efficacious but gentle, “utilitarian and sensuous, democratic and elevated.” The line grew from Matthew Malin’s own sensitive skin, so products aim to work for everyone. Its hero is the Grapefruit Face Cleanser, alongside the Vitamin E moisturiser, the Detox Face Mask, and a signature range of candles and eau de parfums (Cannabis and Dark Rum among them).
The design is the differentiator: Goetz’s eye gave it a strongly minimalist, apothecary-style identity — clean typography and generous white space, with the distinctive plus-sign “+” and the parenthetical “(MALIN+GOETZ)” wordmark, and a single bold accent colour per product against a white ground. (Honest notes: the founders are a couple, partners in life and business; the brand is unisex, not just men’s grooming; Malin merely worked at Kiehl’s — Malin+Goetz is a separate brand; the “Cannabis” scent is a fragrance profile, not a cannabinoid product; the packaging is white with a bold accent, not muted beige minimalism; it is backed by Manzanita Capital (from around 2015; Manzanita also backs Byredo and Diptyque), so it is founder-led but not fully independent; and no official brand hex is published.)
Colour
Malin+Goetz lives in a white-and-grapefruit apothecary palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Malin+Goetz’s identity is minimal, clean and modern-apothecary — an apothecary white, a warm cream, a soft greige, a clinical ink, and a single grapefruit accent. The palette reads exactly like the brand’s design idea: a calm, clinical-but-warm white ground with one bold accent colour doing the work, disciplined and design-led. It signals efficacious, uncomplicated luxury rather than clutter. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a white-plus-one-accent palette signals modern apothecary design. Malin+Goetz’s world reads as clean and intentional. For designers, it is a reminder that a restrained white-and-neutral system, punctuated by a single bold accent per product, can feel both clinical and warm — the discipline is in the white space and typography, not a muted palette. The takeaways: build on white with one bold accent for modern-apothecary calm; let restraint and type carry the design; and treat any single hex as unofficial when there is no published spec.
Typography
The wordmark spirit is a clean grotesque — minimal and design-led.
Malin+Goetz’s identity carries a minimal, design-led, modern spirit — a “(MALIN+GOETZ)” wordmark with its signature plus-sign, whose clean forms reflect a founder who came from Vitra. A clean grotesque captures the mood: it is precise and contemporary, the register of considered design rather than ornament. Set against a white-and-grapefruit palette, the clean grotesque feels minimal and intentional — exactly the modern-apothecary personality the brand carries. It is restrained rather than decorative, mirroring products designed to be uncomplicated. (Malin+Goetz’s real wordmark and “+” are trademarks we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific marks are not ours to use, the honest description is “a clean grotesque spirit,” not the Malin+Goetz logo. The type behaves like the brand: minimal, design-led and modern.

A design eye as the difference
Malin+Goetz stands for designed simplicity.
Malin+Goetz is a lesson in letting a design discipline shape a beauty brand. Because one founder came from Vitra, the brand treats packaging, typography and retail as seriously as the formulas — a minimalist apothecary look, a memorable “+” wordmark, one bold accent per product — so it stands out in a crowded skincare market on design alone. Paired with genuinely gentle, unisex, efficacious products born from a founder’s own sensitive skin, that design-led clarity gave it a distinctive, enduring identity in barbershops, boutiques and beyond.
For designers and brand-builders, Malin+Goetz offers a clear takeaway: a real design discipline can differentiate a product brand. The lessons: invest in design (packaging, type, retail) as a core competency, not an afterthought; keep the system minimal so one accent does the work; and back the look with genuinely good, honest products. It is also a reminder to keep the facts honest: Malin+Goetz was founded in 2004 in New York by the couple Matthew Malin (ex-Kiehl’s) and Andrew Goetz (ex-Vitra), is a unisex modern apothecary, and is Manzanita Capital-backed rather than fully independent — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Malin+Goetz led with a design eye — proof that design can be the difference.
