Marou Brand Guidelines
One province, one bar.

Two constants: a jewel-red-and-gold palette and a deco serif register. Abstract homage — not the Marou packaging.
One province, one bar
Marou made the Vietnamese province the whole system.
Marou is a lesson in a system as identity. Founded around 2011 in Ho Chi Minh City by two Frenchmen, Samuel Maruta and Vincent Mourou — and styled “Faiseurs de Chocolat,” chocolate makers — it is widely credited as Vietnam’s first bean-to-bar maker, turning single-origin Vietnamese cacao into a design system.
Its identity is the province single-origin system: each bar is named for the Vietnamese province its cacao comes from — Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Nai, Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Ba Ria — and each gets its own colourway and pattern. The wrappers are the signature: richly patterned, screen-printed-style foil and paper, designed by the Saigon studio Rice Creative (Chi-An De Leo and Joshua Breidenbach) — a documented, award-winning design authorship. Set in tall, deco-influenced capitals, the “MAROU” wordmark reads like an old trading house.
(Honest notes: the founders are Maruta and Mourou, two Frenchmen based in Saigon; the house dates to around 2011. We describe Marou as founded and led by them rather than making a firm 2026 ownership claim, and its café footprint shifts over time. There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)
Colour
Marou lives in a jewel-red-and-gold palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Marou’s identity is ornate, jewel-toned and stately — a jewel red, an ink, a deco gold, a province teal, and a cream. The palette pairs a jewel red with a deco gold, joined by a province teal — the register of a patterned, luxe wrapper. It signals craft and provenance rather than mass chocolate. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a jewel red with a gold signals a patterned, luxe wrapper. Marou’s world is a shelf of province colourways. For designers, it is a reminder that a rich, deco-influenced palette reads as heritage and collectible — right for a single-origin system. The takeaways: give each origin a colourway; pattern the wrapper (a named studio helps); set the name in stately capitals; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a deco serif — stately, patterned, luxe.
Marou’s identity carries a stately, patterned, luxe spirit — a province colourway and an ornate wrapper. A deco-influenced serif in capitals captures the mood: it is elegant and formal, the register of an old trading house. Set in a jewel-red-and-gold palette, the deco serif feels stately and luxe — exactly the personality Marou carries. It is patterned rather than plain, mirroring a screen-printed wrapper. (Marou’s real wrappers and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a deco serif spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: stately, patterned and luxe.

A system as identity
Marou stands for a province in every bar.
Marou is a lesson in making a system the identity. A jewel-red-and-gold palette, a deco serif and a province colourway make a single-origin system the whole brand — stately, patterned, luxe. The system is the differentiator. The differentiator is a province-by-province, wrapper-led identity.
For designers and brand-builders, Marou offers a clear takeaway: make origin the design system. The lessons: give each origin its own colourway and pattern; commission a real studio (Rice Creative); set the name with heritage confidence; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s a 2011 Saigon house founded by two Frenchmen, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Marou made a province system the brand — proof that origin, well-designed, can be the difference.
