McConnell’s Brand Guidelines
Fine ice cream, from scratch since 1949.

Two constants: a heritage palette and a heritage serif. Abstract homage — not the McConnell’s wordmark or logo.
Made from scratch
McConnell’s has churned since 1949.
McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams is a lesson in heritage plus real craft. Founded in 1949 in Santa Barbara, California by Gordon “Mac” McConnell and Ernesteen McConnell, it has been made from scratch for over seventy years. Since 2012 it has been owned by Michael Palmer, a winemaker, and Eva Ein, a chef and restaurateur, who reopened the State Street flagship in 2013 and modernised the creamery.
Unusually, McConnell’s owns its own dairy — “The Old Dairy” — and makes its base from Central Coast grass-grazed milk and cream, organic egg yolks and cane sugar, with no stabilisers, preservatives or fillers. A very low overrun (about 10% air, versus 40%+ for mass brands) gives it a dense, velvety texture. Flavours include Eureka Lemon & Marionberries and Salted Caramel Chip. Its heritage seal and “Since 1949” line anchor the look.
(Honest notes: it was founded by a couple — Gordon and Ernesteen McConnell, not Gordon alone; Palmer and Ein are called “third-generation” owners as a stewardship claim, not blood heirs; the ownership change is 2012, the flagship reopening 2013; “Turkish Coffee” is a past/seasonal flavour, not a current signature; and no official brand hex is published.)
Colour
McConnell’s lives in an ivory-and-heritage palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
McConnell’s identity is heritage, warm and premium — a marionberry, a vintage gold, a sage, an ivory, and a deep charcoal. The palette leans on a cream/ivory ground with dark charcoal type, letting the richer heritage tones and per-flavour pint art carry the colour. It signals a from-scratch, since-1949 creamery rather than a modern DTC start-up. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is ivory and charcoal read as heritage craft. McConnell’s world feels timeless and hand-made. For designers, it is a reminder that a restrained, warm-neutral base with a seal and a heritage date can signal decades of craft, matching a brand that genuinely owns its dairy. The takeaways: build on a cream/ivory ground; let marionberry, gold and sage act as heritage accents; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using the deep charcoal for small text so the accents stay in the palette.
Typography
The wordmark spirit is a heritage serif — classic and warm.
McConnell’s identity carries a classic, heritage-craft spirit — a “McConnell’s” mark with a script-and-seal, “Since 1949” feel, all Americana-creamery cues. A heritage serif captures the mood: it is timeless and warm, the register of a brand that has churned by hand for over seventy years. Set against an ivory ground, the heritage serif feels crafted and enduring — exactly the from-scratch, dairy-owning, quality-obsessed personality McConnell’s carries. It is classic rather than trendy, mirroring a real, old creamery brought into the present. (McConnell’s real wordmark and seal are trademarks we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a heritage serif spirit,” not the McConnell’s logo. The type behaves like the brand: classic, heritage and warm.

Owning the craft as the difference
McConnell’s stands for from-scratch since 1949.
McConnell’s is a lesson in vertical craft as the whole story. It did not chase trends; it leaned on seventy-plus years of from-scratch making and the rare fact that it owns its own dairy, controlling everything from milk to churn. A dense, low-overrun texture and no fillers back the premium promise. The differentiator is authenticity you can taste: own the craft end to end, and the heritage is real, not decorative.
For designers and brand-builders, McConnell’s offers a clear takeaway: a heritage identity works when the heritage is genuine. The lessons: let a real founding date and a seal anchor the look (Since 1949); keep the palette warm and restrained so it reads timeless; and let the craft story — owning the dairy, low overrun, no fillers — do the persuading. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: McConnell’s was founded by a couple in 1949, its current owners are stewards rather than heirs, and it owns its creamery — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. McConnell’s owns its craft — proof that genuine heritage can be the difference.
