The Old Master

A Cape brandy that named itself after a master.

Oude Meester is Dutch for “old master.” The brand’s own website, in an archived 2012 version, said its V.S.O.B had been enjoyed “since its launch in 1948,” and called it “a light golden brandy.” Kenya’s Capital FM, reporting the brand’s arrival in Nairobi in December 2011, put the same year on it in different words, describing Oude Meester as “the first brand that Distell acquired in 1948.”

The company behind it for most of that time was Distillers Corporation, the Stellenbosch spirits business founded by the South African businessman Anton Rupert. The Whiskypedia reference on scotchwhisky.com says Rupert steered Distillers Corporation towards spirits, “particularly brandy,” and credits the company with raising South African brandy “from relative obscurity to a high-profile drink.”

On 4 December 2000 Distillers Corporation merged with Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery to form Distell, English Wikipedia says, and Distell’s brand list, as cited there from the company’s own 2014 material, included Oude Meester V.S.O.B and Oude Meester Reserve alongside Klipdrift, Richelieu, Viceroy and Van Ryn’s. In Kenya, Capital FM reported, the brand was launched by Distell Winemasters, whose brands manager presented it as a premium brandy for Kenya’s growing number of discerning drinkers.

The brand’s most unusual visual choice is a face. Oude Meester’s 2012 website gave a long account of Benjamin Franklin — printer, scientist and diplomat — and presented him as the man most deserving of the title “Old Master,” adding: “No wonder his head adorns every bottle of Oude Meester brandy.” A short line on the same site called him “a master of words” and said “his head is on the bottle of oude meester.” The site’s menus ran under the line “Master your look” and invited visitors to “Join the blue door society,” its name for a members’ club.

By then the range had become a ladder of ages. The 2012 site listed the V.S.O.B; Demant, which it said was launched in 2008 and double distilled; a 12-year-old Reserve, “aged for 12 years in French oak barrels”; and Souverein, double distilled and matured for 18 years, which it described as “auburn-amber” and placed “at the apex of the range.” In February 2013 Tim James, writing in the Mail & Guardian, called Souverein “beautifully packaged” and “elegantly refined,” and said it had been developed only fairly recently. He tasted it at Distell’s Van Ryn distillery near Stellenbosch, where the master distiller, Brink Liebenberg, set out to show him some of the differences between French cognac and South African brandy; James named Oude Meester and Van Ryn as the Distell brands that performed well in international competitions. In April 2025, writing on winemag.co.za, he referred to “the sadly discontinued Oude Meester Souverein.”

Packaging has carried special editions too. In July 2013 The Media Online reported that Oude Meester had launched a special edition of Demant, sold only through Pick n Pay until the end of that month and promoted with a social-media competition under the hashtag #ilovedemant. Its designers, the report said, used applied ceramic labelling across the entire bottle rather than a paper label.

Advertising has used living famous faces as well as a historical one. The Spirits Business, in a January 2021 report by Tom Bruce-Gardyne on the state of South African brandy, said Oude Meester had hired the Hollywood actor Jamie Foxx for an advertising campaign, followed by Idris Elba in 2014.

Brandy in the Cape.

The seven brands in this group are South African brandies and whiskies: Klipdrift, Richelieu, Oude Meester, Van Ryn’s and Viceroy on the brandy side, and Three Ships and Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky on the whisky side. All seven were brands of Distell, the Stellenbosch drinks group that English Wikipedia records was formed in 2000 by merging Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery and Distillers Corporation.

They now share an owner for the same reason. Heineken announced its plan to buy most of Distell on 15 November 2021 and completed the acquisition in April 2023, placing those brands in Heineken Beverages, a new company that combined them with Heineken South Africa and Namibia Breweries. Distell’s Scotch whisky business, formerly Burn Stewart Distillers, was not part of it: it was spun out under Capevin Holdings and renamed CVH Spirits, the whisky writer Ian Fraser reported in June 2023, while South Africa’s own whiskies, among them Three Ships and Bain’s, are listed among Heineken Beverages’ brands.

Brandy in South Africa is sold in legal classes — blended brandy, which The Spirits Business described in 2021 as pot still brandy mixed with up to 70% unaged grape spirit, and potstill brandies aged for longer — and several of these names cover more than one class. Production is spread across the Western Cape: the Van Ryn’s Distillery at Vlottenburg, near Stellenbosch, makes Van Ryn’s and Viceroy, and Bain’s and Three Ships are distilled at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its spirit is made and how its labels have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Oude Meester

From Distillers Corporation to Heineken Beverages.

Oude Meester also looked abroad. In April 2013 Brand South Africa reported that the brand, which it described as part of the Distell family, had begun to win attention in the United States after it was shown to American trade buyers and drinkers in New York the year before. “South African brandy has established a powerful reputation in the UK and Europe, but our connoisseur offerings are still something of a novelty in the US,” Lee-Anne Lotz, Oude Meester’s global marketing representative, said in a statement quoted in the report. Kenya had followed in late 2011, Capital FM reported, with the brand arriving in three ranges and its launch framed around Kenyans becoming “the masters of their own destiny,” in the words of Distell’s brands manager there, Karen Gikunda.

Ownership changed in 2023. On 26 April 2023 Heineken announced that it had completed its acquisition of Distell and Namibia Breweries and combined them with Heineken South Africa in a new majority-owned business, Heineken Beverages. English Wikipedia, citing Heineken’s 2024 annual report, gives Heineken N.V.’s holding in Heineken Beverages as 65 per cent. Oude Meester came to Heineken as a Distell brand, and Distell has been part of Heineken Beverages since that date.

For a design guide, Oude Meester shows how a brand can borrow authority from a historical face and a name that means “master,” then build a ladder of aged bottles beneath it. Compare Richelieu, another brandy from Distell’s old portfolio, and KWV, the Paarl house whose brandies sit on the same shelves. For this guide we use deep blue, old gold, brandy amber and parchment with an old-style serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
