A Canadian label from a pro-am in the Azores

Golfing friends, a trip abroad and a men’s golf line from Mississauga.

Sligo is a men’s golf apparel label from Mississauga, Ontario, west of Toronto. The company’s own releases, carried by the trade wire The Golf Wire between 2008 and 2012, tell a consistent founding story: Sligo Wear Inc. was started by a group of friends and active golfers who were frustrated by what they saw as a lack of fashionable, well-fitting and affordable golf clothing. The idea, the company says, took shape at a pro-am in the Azores in early 2004, where the group noticed a different approach to golf dress, and on their return they set up the business.

The company says Sligo did well in Canada first. A release dated December 2008 says that in 2007 the company signed a deal with Fairway Styles Inc. of Richmond, Virginia, to take the line into the United States. The same release, datelined Mississauga, announced that the two-time PGA Tour winner Ben Crane had joined the brand’s tour staff alongside Brian Gay, who had re-signed with the company that month. Sligo also named the PGA Tour winner Eric Axley and the teaching professional Jeff Ritter among those who had worn its clothes, and said its 2009 collection would be shown at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando that January.

Tour players remained the brand’s main shop window. A January 2011 release announced that Gay would sign autographs at Sligo’s booth at that year’s PGA Merchandise Show, with fans invited to send questions for a short filmed Q&A through the brand’s Facebook page. A release dated January 2012 announced that Scotland’s Russell Knox, then a PGA Tour rookie, had signed for the 2012 season, joining Gay and Canada’s Graham DeLaet on the staff, with Justin Hicks representing the brand on the Nationwide Tour.

Colour

Named colourways, plaids and a print drawn from tile.

Sligo built its look on pattern and colour rather than on a single emblem with a documented history. The release for the 2010 spring line, dated September 2009, named in-line shirts called the O’Brien, the Robinson and the Scriver and five new polos, and listed colourways including Crimson, Ice, McKenna and Sligo Green, alongside what the company called statement plaid trousers and shorts. The same release said the new polos used a four-way mechanical stretch polyester.

The most unusual piece in that release was a print the company called Digitile. Sligo said the design was influenced by Moroccan tile work dating back to the 14th century and by the Hispano-Moresque tradition still seen in Spanish and Portuguese architecture, and that it followed the same mix of hand drawing, cutting and geometry as that craft. It was offered on a pant and a jacket in two colours, slate and platinum.

By 2012 the company was describing an “outfits” approach to design, blending North American and European fashion trends with the technical fabrics a golfer needs. The 2012 collection, its release said, included golf shirts, short- and long-sleeved wind shirts and jackets, sweaters in v-neck, quarter-zip and cardigan styles, and technical pants and shorts in solids and patterns. A 2011 release also listed outerwear, headwear and accessories in the range.

The seven brands in this group are all golf names: Sligo, Adams Golf, Scratch Golf, Wishon, Nike Golf, KJUS and Original Penguin. Golf brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from small workshops that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger sporting-goods or apparel groups, and a single name can appear everywhere from a club pro shop to a department-store rail.

A golf brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single club or shirt than by a mark, a name and the game it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or narrowed or widened what it sells. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its clubs or clothing are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Sligo

A men’s line paired with a women’s label from Montreal.

In 2015 Sligo came together with a women’s golf label from Montreal. A release from January 2016, datelined Montreal, said that since the previous summer NIVO and Sligo had been “even better together,” described Sligo as based in Mississauga and “now a proud part of NIVO SPORT,” and announced that the two brands would show side by side at the 2016 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. NIVO, the release said, made style-driven, performance-oriented apparel for women, influenced by North American and European fashion.

Sligo is still sold alongside that women’s line. Archived copies of sligowear.com from 2019 show a joint “Nivo & Sligo” shop with separate men’s and women’s sections, and the old address now forwards to the site of NVO Sport, where Sligo has its own menu of tops, bottoms and essentials. NVO Sport says its brand was launched in 2005 by a team led by Diane Lanctôt and that its designers work in Montreal. On its current Sligo page, the company describes Sligo as a golf apparel brand made for the modern man and says it partners with PGA players to design and develop its clothing lines.

The name needs a little care online. Sligo is also a town and county in the north-west of Ireland, home to the County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point, which has no connection with the Canadian apparel brand.

For a design guide, Sligo shows how a small Canadian label used named colourways, plaids and a tile-inspired print, worn by touring professionals, to give a men’s golf line its own character. Compare Peter Millar, the golf clothier from Raleigh, North Carolina, and TravisMathew, the golf wear label from Huntington Beach, California. For this guide we use Sligo green, slate and platinum with a clean sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
