A beauty line from an Ohio fashion group

From an Express offshoot to the name on the parent company.

Bath & Body Works began inside a fashion group. Racked reported in December 2014 that the business was founded in 1990 in New Albany, Ohio, as the beauty line of the clothing chain Express, and that its first store opened in a mall in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in September 1990. Its parent group traced back to The Limited, which Les Wexner had started with a single store in Upper Arlington, Ohio, in 1963, according to English Wikipedia.

The early shops leaned on a homely story. The New York Times reported in October 1991 that the chain had created a character called Kate and laid out its stores to suggest her country house; the same report covered a lawsuit filed that year by The Body Shop, and English Wikipedia says the dispute led Bath & Body Works to rebrand.

For most of its life the chain was one brand among several at its parent. Limited Brands renamed itself L Brands in March 2013, Reuters reported, and English Wikipedia says Wexner stepped down as chief executive in May 2020, succeeded by Andrew Meslow, who had been running Bath & Body Works. A deal with the private-equity firm Sycamore Partners over Victoria’s Secret ended instead in what the two sides called a “mutual termination,” announced on 4 May 2020. L Brands announced a spin-off in March 2021, and in August 2021 it completed the spin-off of Victoria’s Secret as a separate listed company and took the name Bath & Body Works, Inc., trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BBWI. English Wikipedia, citing CNBC, says Daniel Heaf became chief executive on 19 May 2025, succeeding Gina Boswell.

Home fragrance arrived in the late 1990s. BusinessWeek reported in August 1997 on a secondary format called Bath & Body Works at Home, and the Akron Beacon Journal reported in November 1999 on the White Barn Candle Company, a division specialising in scented candles. English Wikipedia, citing Willett’s The American Beauty Industry Encyclopedia (2010), dates the first conversions of Bath & Body Works stores into White Barn Candle Company shops to 1998. The New York Times reported in May 2005 that Limited Brands had bought the home-fragrance maker Slatkin & Company.

The candle most associated with the brand is the three-wick candle, which a December 2025 story on the company’s corporate site headlines as “famous.” That story describes how the company makes many of its candles at its Beauty Park campus near its headquarters in the Columbus area. The same story says its candles use cotton wicks in more than 50 different styles matched to each fragrance and vessel, that its wax comes in more than 400 colours, and that designers create patterns for each seasonal collection, some of them hand-painted, so that the jar can sit in a room as décor. The company also says new formulas pass through burn rooms and long stability tests before they reach shops, and that a new scent was released for its annual Candle Day sale in December 2025.

The supply chain has been rebuilt close to Ohio. The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2023 that the company had moved its production system to the outskirts of Columbus, with suppliers agreeing to relocate there, a decision English Wikipedia links to frustration with shipping delays. Earlier, in December 2021, a candle factory of the supplier Mayfield Consumer Products was destroyed by a tornado, English Wikipedia records.

The seven brands in this group are all candle and home-fragrance names: Glade, Bath & Body Works, Chesapeake Bay Candle, Bolsius, ILLUME, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and Price’s Candles. Candle and home-fragrance brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from small studios that still pour by hand to names that now belong to much larger household-goods groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a supermarket aisle to a boutique shelf.

A candle brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single candle than by a jar, a label, a scent name and the story printed on the box, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its candles are actually made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its candles are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Bath & Body Works

From Ohio malls to stores abroad.

The chain grew beyond the United States in the 2000s. English Wikipedia, citing The Canadian Press, says the first Canadian locations were announced in July 2008, alongside the parent group’s purchase of the lingerie chain La Senza, and Fortune reported in February 2013 that the first stores outside North America had opened in Kuwait in October 2010, operated by the retail franchise group M. H. Alshaya Co.

The name has to be read with care. The retail brand and the listed company now share it: bathandbodyworks.com is the shopping site, while the corporate and investor pages sit at bbwinc.com. Older reports file the same business under The Limited, Limited Brands or L Brands, depending on the year, and Victoria’s Secret & Co. has been a separate company since August 2021. The Body Shop, the British chain that sued in 1991, is an unrelated business.

No designer or agency for the Bath & Body Works wordmark is named in the sources, so none is credited here; the brand’s visual identity is carried day to day by its seasonal candle jars and labels, which the company says its own designers create for each collection.

For a design guide, Bath & Body Works shows how a mall retailer started as an offshoot of a clothing chain could make a single object, the three-wick candle in a seasonal jar, into the focus of an annual December sale, and end up giving its name to the whole parent company. Compare Glade, S. C. Johnson’s home-fragrance brand from Wisconsin, and ILLUME, the American candle maker. For this guide we use ink navy, wick gold and wax ivory with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
