Brazil’s everyday colour

Acrilex is Brazil’s ubiquitous school and craft colour maker since 1964, the largest crafts-paint producer in Latin America.

Acrilex is a lesson in how a colour becomes a country’s everyday craft. From São Bernardo do Campo, in the state of São Paulo, this Brazilian company makes the paint that fills classrooms, craft tables and hobby kits across Brazil — school gouache and finger paint, craft acrylics, fabric paints, and its famous Kimeleka slime. Its answer to how a colour is made is broad and accessible: make colour for every kind of everyday making, affordable and everywhere, from the schoolroom to the craft fair. A colour made for a nation’s hands-on creativity.

Its identity is Brazil’s everyday colour. Acrilex’s school paints, its craft and fabric colours, and its Kimeleka line are the work it is known for. A colour, made ordinary and everywhere. A house woven into how Brazil makes and learns.

(Honest notes, so the story stays precise. Acrilex — Acrilex Tintas Artísticas, legally Acrilex Tintas Especiais S.A. — is a genuinely Brazilian manufacturer. It was founded in 1964 in the city of São Paulo and, since 1972, has manufactured at its own site in São Bernardo do Campo, in the São Paulo state industrial region — so we say “founded in São Paulo, manufacturing in São Bernardo do Campo.” It was founded by two brothers of a Japanese-Brazilian family whose surname appears inconsistently even on the company’s own site, so we credit “the Kobashi brothers” and hedge the spelling. It describes itself as the largest crafts-paint maker in Latin America; its identity is mass-market school, craft and hobby colour, with genuine student and artist ranges (its “Artístico” and “Belas Artes” lines) — so we do not cast it as a premium fine-art house on the tier of the European colourmen. A signature product is Kimeleka, its craft slime. We do not assert current family control or any stock listing. Its name and product names (Kimeleka and others) and labels are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)

Colour

Acrilex lives in a vivid-pink palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Acrilex’s identity is everyday, bright and accessible — a vivid pink, an ink, a mauve, a plum, and a paper. The palette leans vivid pink and mauve: the register of a craft-table colour and a school paint set. It signals reach and fun over prestige. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.

The lesson is a vivid-pink palette signals an everyday, made-in-Brazil identity. Acrilex’s world is an accessible, craft-and-school, Brazilian-made object. For designers, it is a reminder that a vivid pink and a soft mauve can carry a brand built on everyday making — the brightness of a craft colour and the warmth of a classroom. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: make it affordable; make it broad; make it everywhere; and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a craft sans — friendly, rounded, approachable.

Acrilex’s identity carries a friendly, rounded, approachable spirit — an everyday craft brand, not a luxury house. A craft sans captures the mood: warm, cheerful and unpretentious, the register of a colour for every school bag and craft table. Set in a vivid-pink palette, the craft sans feels friendly and rounded — exactly the personality Acrilex carries. It is approachable rather than exclusive, mirroring an affordable everyday colour. (Acrilex’s real labels and marks are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a craft-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the house: friendly, rounded and approachable.

The colour specialists

Acrilex stands for the everyday craft colour of a nation.

Acrilex is a lesson in how a colour is made the material of everyday creativity. A vivid-pink palette, a craft sans and a school gouache make one thing — the colour a country crafts and learns with — the whole house: everyday, bright and accessible. The reach is the differentiator, and the breadth of everyday making is the meaning. The point is a colour maker that owns the school and craft table rather than the gallery, and that became a household name by being affordable, broad and everywhere.

Put to work, the identity is accessibility as design. A colour house in this spirit would compete on breadth and reach, own the everyday and hobby space with pride, and be honest that it is a mass-market craft leader rather than a premium fine-art house. It would treat a beloved product like its craft slime as a real asset, not an embarrassment. A brand learning from it would see that being a nation’s everyday craft colour is a powerful identity — that the paint a whole country first plays and learns with builds a bond no premium marque can buy — and that being precise, founded 1964 in São Paulo, manufacturing in São Bernardo do Campo since 1972, largest crafts-paint maker in Latin America but not a fine-art peer of the European houses, keeps the story honest. A brand learning from it would also accept the modest facts, hedging a founder’s surname it cannot spell with certainty rather than inventing confidence. The lesson Acrilex teaches is that everyday accessibility can hold an identity: the breadth gives it reach, and the ubiquity gives it meaning. The everydayness is the personality, and the craft colour is the proof.

For designers and brand-builders, Acrilex holds the everyday-craft pole in this round of the colour specialists, from Brazil: own the everyday, and be proud of it. The lessons: compete on reach and value; embrace the craft and school space; be candid about the tier you serve; and never reproduce a protected label. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Acrilex is Brazil’s ubiquitous school and craft colour maker since 1964, manufacturing in São Bernardo do Campo and the largest crafts-paint producer in Latin America — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Acrilex made everyday craft the identity — proof that owning the ordinary can be the difference.
