Gondar

An endowment, a hilltop city and a brewery.

Dashen beer comes from Dashen Brewery, a share company founded in 2000 in Gondar, in Ethiopia’s Amhara Region. English Wikipedia, citing a 2009 study published by the International Livestock Research Institute, gives its initial capital as 340 million birr, and Tigrai Online, reporting in May 2012, described the Gondar plant as standing on an 8.5-hectare site. The name is shared with Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest mountain, in the Simien range north-east of the city.

The founder was Tiret Corporate, an endowment organisation. Addis Fortune reported in 2022 that Tiret was established in 1995 in Bahir Dar, the regional capital, with an initial capital of 26.1 million birr, and that it originally owned the whole of Dashen Brewery. The Reporter, an Addis Ababa weekly, described Tiret in April 2026 as an endowment linked to the Amhara Regional State.

From the start the brewery was a Gondar business. Its first plant, in the city itself, had a capacity of 800,000 hectolitres a year, Addis Fortune reported, later raised to 1.2 million. In 2012 Tigrai Online named two beers made there, Dashen and Royal. The company also put its name on the local football pitch: Dashen Beer Football Club, founded and run by the brewery in 2004, played in the Ethiopian Premier League with Gondar as its home and was dissolved in 2016 after relegation, English Wikipedia says.

A German lender, a London investor and a second brewery.

The brewery changed shape in 2012. In May of that year Tigrai Online, citing World Stage Group, reported that the German development finance institution DEG was investing in Dashen, the first international development finance institution to back the company, as part of a wider equity investment alongside the London-based Duet Group and Vasari. The money, it said, was to expand production capacity and improve distribution so that the brewery could reach more of Ethiopia, using German brewing technology.

Addis Fortune reported in 2022 that Duet, a UK investment firm founded in 2002 that describes itself as a global alternative asset manager, acquired 51% of Dashen Brewery in 2012; The Reporter wrote in April 2026 that Duet has held the majority stake since then, with Tiret keeping its founder’s interest. In 2017 The Reporter described the brewery as partly owned by Tiret Corporate and Vasari Global, which it called a UK-based subsidiary of Duet, and English Wikipedia names Vasari Global and Tiret as the owners today.

The new owners built a second brewery at Debre Birhan, in the North Shewa Zone north-east of Addis Ababa. Addis Fortune dates its opening to late 2015, with a capacity of 2 million hectolitres a year, and The Reporter wrote in April 2017 that the plant had been completed about a year earlier.

New beers followed. In April 2017 The Reporter reported the launch of Balageru, a beer introduced with little fanfare ahead of the holiday season, with plans to roll it out to regional capitals. The same report said the brewery sponsored concerts and used English footballers to promote its beers in Ethiopia.

The seven brands in this group all make food or drink, and all of them come from Ghana, Ethiopia or Nigeria: Nkulenu, Kasapreko, Dashen, Star, Hollandia, Chivita and Gala. Food and drink brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s surname to names that now belong to much larger groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a roadside kiosk to a supermarket shelf.

A food or drink brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a pack, a name and the meal or moment it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its factory or grown far beyond the town where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its products are actually made and packed.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Dashen

Bigger plants and an Ethiopian chief executive.

Dashen’s two breweries were enlarged again in the early 2020s. On 8 May 2022 the company inaugurated expansion projects at Gondar and Debre Birhan costing more than 1.7 billion birr, Capital, the Addis Ababa business weekly, reported; Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen attended. According to Capital and Addis Fortune, the work raised the Debre Birhan plant from 2 million to 3.2 million hectolitres a year and the Gondar plant from 800,000 to 1.2 million, a combined 4.4 million hectolitres. Addis Fortune named Elmi Olindo Contractors as the builder. Capital reported that the company expected the expansion to bring new product lines and more jobs at both sites, and to let it buy more of its main raw material, barley, from local producers.

Both breweries are in Ethiopia, in Gondar and Debre Birhan. When the 2012 investment was announced, Tigrai Online reported that it was meant to grow the brewery’s market reach within Ethiopia.

Leadership has also changed. The Reporter and Addis Fortune reported in April 2026 that the board had appointed Matiyas Getachew as permanent chief executive. He joined Dashen as chief financial officer in 2020, had earlier worked for SABMiller, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa and Diageo, and had been acting chief executive since the departure in late 2025 of Mario van Geldern, who led the company for five years. The Reporter called him the first Ethiopian executive to head a major brewery in a sector traditionally led by expatriates, and Addis Fortune reported that the board had searched internationally before choosing an internal candidate.

Addis Fortune wrote in 2026 that the Debre Birhan expansion had helped place Dashen among the more prominent players in Ethiopia’s brewing industry.

For a design guide, Dashen shows how a beer can carry the name of its home region through changes of owner and scale. Compare Star, the Lagos lager brewed by Nigerian Breweries since 1949, and Kasapreko, the Ghanaian drinks maker. For this guide we use malt brown, a barley gold and a highland green with a display serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
