The tea wall

DAVIDsTEA made tea bright, playful and easy to love.

DAVIDsTEA is a lesson in playfulness as identity. Founded in 2008 by cousins David and Herschel Segal — Montreal HQ, first store on Toronto’s Queen Street West — it made tea bright, fun and accessible, an anti-stuffy contrast to traditional tea shops.

Its identity is bright, playful, accessible tea retail: a signature teal/turquoise brand colour, a huge range of flavoured and novelty loose-leaf blends with fun dessert and pop-culture names, sold from colourful tins along a “tea wall” with sniff-jars. The naming leans into fun — Cream of Earl Grey and Forever Nuts are the signatures, joined by seasonal blends like Birthday Cake and Cotton Candy. The wordmark runs it all together: DAVIDsTEA.

(Honest notes: DAVIDsTEA survived a 2020 restructuring — it closed most of its stores (down from ~240 to around two dozen) and pivoted to e-commerce and wholesale, and it moved from NASDAQ to the TSX Venture Exchange in 2023. It’s controlled by Herschel Segal’s Rainy Day Investments; Herschel died in 2025, and Sarah Segal is CEO (co-founder David Segal left years ago). There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation.)

Colour

DAVIDsTEA lives in a teal-and-pink palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

DAVIDsTEA’s identity is bright, playful and accessible — an ink, a DAVIDs teal, a bright turquoise, a candy pink, and a chalk. The palette pairs a signature teal with a candy pink — the register of a fun, colourful tea wall. It signals joy and approachability rather than ceremony. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is a signature teal with a candy pink signals playful, accessible tea. DAVIDsTEA’s world is a colourful wall of tins. For designers, it is a reminder that a bright signature colour with a candy accent reads as fun and welcoming — right for an anti-stuffy tea brand. The takeaways: own one bright signature colour (teal); add a candy accent; make the range playful (dessert names); and treat any single hex as unofficial.

Typography

The register is a playful sans — friendly, bright, accessible.

DAVIDsTEA’s identity carries a friendly, bright, accessible spirit — a colourful tea wall and fun blends. A playful sans captures the mood: it is rounded and cheerful, the register of an approachable brand. Set in a teal-and-pink palette, the playful sans feels friendly and bright — exactly the personality DAVIDsTEA carries. It is accessible rather than ceremonial, mirroring a wall of colourful tins. (DAVIDsTEA’s real packaging and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a playful sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: friendly, bright and accessible.

Playfulness as identity

DAVIDsTEA stands for making tea fun.

DAVIDsTEA is a lesson in making playfulness the identity. A teal-and-pink palette, a playful sans and a colourful tea wall make fun the whole brand — friendly, bright, accessible. The playfulness is the differentiator. The differentiator is a teal, novelty-blend identity.

For designers and brand-builders, DAVIDsTEA offers a clear takeaway: make the category fun and welcoming. The lessons: own a bright signature colour (teal); build a joyful range (dessert-named blends); make the shop an experience (the tea wall); and be honest about the business. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it restructured in 2020, it’s Rainy-Day-controlled, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. DAVIDsTEA made playfulness the brand — proof that fun can be the difference.
