Drink better

Humm made kombucha approachable.

Humm Kombucha is a lesson in widening a niche. Founded in 2009 in Bend, Oregon by Jamie Danek (the business lead and CEO) and Michelle Mitchell (the brewer, who learned kombucha from her mother-in-law), it began in a home kitchen as “Kombucha Mama” before becoming Humm. Early sales were literally door-to-door in Bend, delivered from a Prius.

Humm’s core idea is approachability: a smoother, less tangy, more accessible kombucha designed to win over newcomers — “only make booch you want to drink.” The range spans an organic Original, a Nitro line, and a shelf-stable Zero Sugar line (sweetened with monk fruit and allulose), reaching all 50 states.

(Honest notes: the business was founded in 2009 — the “2008” you may see is when the founders met and began home-brewing; a planned Roanoke, Virginia plant was announced then cancelled; on ownership, Humm was acquired in January 2024 by SYSTM Foods, so it is no longer independent; and no official brand hex is published.)

Colour

Humm lives in a bright, cheerful palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.

Humm’s identity is bright, cheerful and approachable — a strawberry red, a sunny yellow, a blueberry blue, a cream, and an ink. Bold, flavour-coded colours and a friendly lowercase wordmark make Humm read as fun and welcoming rather than earnest or niche. It signals an everyday, for-everyone booch rather than a hardcore wellness product. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.

The lesson is bright, cheerful colour widens the audience. Humm’s world is playful and unintimidating. For designers, it is a reminder that friendly colour and lettering can make a fermented, functional drink feel accessible to newcomers, matching a brand built on approachability. The takeaways: use bold, flavour-coded brights; keep the wordmark friendly; and treat any single hex as unofficial — using the ink for small text so the brights carry the packaging.

Typography

The wordmark spirit is a rounded sans — friendly and easy.

Humm’s identity carries a friendly, easy, cheerful spirit — a lowercase “humm” wordmark that feels soft and welcoming. A rounded sans captures the mood: it is approachable and warm, the register of a brand whose tagline is “Drink Better” and whose team are “Hummsters.” Set against bright, flavour-coded cans, the rounded sans feels fun and unintimidating — exactly the “only make booch you want to drink” personality Humm carries. It is easygoing rather than earnest, mirroring an accessible everyday kombucha. (Humm’s real wordmark is a trademark we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not something we assert.) Because the specific mark is not ours to use, the honest description is “a rounded sans spirit,” not the Humm logo. The type behaves like the brand: friendly, easy and cheerful.

Approachability as the difference

Humm stands for kombucha anyone can enjoy.

Humm is a lesson in designing for the newcomer. It did not chase the most intense, tangy, hardcore kombucha; it went the other way — smoother, sweeter, friendlier — to bring people who found kombucha off-putting into the category. A bright, cheerful identity made the drink feel easy. The differentiator is accessibility: lower the barrier, and you grow the audience.

For designers and brand-builders, Humm offers a clear takeaway: friendly design can turn a niche product into an everyday one. The lessons: use bright, flavour-coded colour and soft lettering; keep the voice light and human (“booch,” “Hummsters”); and match the packaging to an approachable product. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: Humm was founded in 2009 in Bend, grew from door-to-door delivery, and is now owned by SYSTM Foods — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Humm made booch approachable — proof that accessibility can be the difference.
