Münster, 1925

Two seed traders and a 70-square-metre store.

Kiepenkerl is the garden brand of Bruno Nebelung GmbH, a seed company based in Everswinkel, a municipality in the Warendorf district of Westphalia, east of Münster. The company says it was founded on 1 July 1925 in Münster by Bruno Nebelung and Franz Volmary as a specialist seed trader, set up to supply seed shops and commercial growers with seed that was true to variety, and that it began in a store of 70 square metres.

Its own history marks the steps that followed. After buying the Kaldenhof estate near Münster in 1947, the company says, it began breeding its own “Original Nebelung” varieties, with quality checks carried out in an in-house seed laboratory; modern filling machines and climate-controlled stores followed in the 1980s. In 1994–1995 the business moved to its present site in Everswinkel. German Wikipedia’s article on the municipality lists Bruno Nebelung GmbH, with the trademark Kiepenkerl, among the companies headquartered there.

The company has stayed in family hands. It describes itself as a family business now led in the third generation by Nico Volmary, and the legal notice on the Kiepenkerl website names Nicolaus Volmary and Werner Großeschallau as managing directors. In 2025 the company marked its centenary on its website, looking back on a hundred years of trading from Münster and Everswinkel.

Bulbs from South Holland and a trial garden at home.

Kiepenkerl covers far more than vegetable packets. Nebelung lists it alongside sister brands including Hegemeister Kiepenkerl, for game-cover and meadow mixtures, the professional lawn-seed brand Majestic, Pegasus and SPERLI. Under the Kiepenkerl name the range runs from vegetable, herb and flower seed to lawn seed and flower bulbs, with young plants sold through a Kiepenkerl Profi-Line plant concept for growers and retailers. The company says it sells through independent garden centres, nurseries, DIY stores and buying groups, and to landscapers, councils and sports-turf users.

Bulbs come through the Netherlands. Nebelung says its subsidiary Bruno Nebelung Holland B.V. began trading in flower bulbs on 27 October 1964 on a site in Voorhout, South Holland, close to the bulb-growing district around Hillegom, Lisse and Sassenheim, and added a high-bay warehouse there in 1998. Since 2004, the company says, Kiepenkerl bulbs have been shown in two large display beds at the Keukenhof spring gardens near Lisse.

Seed is tested at home. The company describes a “quality garden” of about 2,000 square metres at Everswinkel, plus a further 1.5-hectare test field on neighbouring farmland, where more than 1,000 vegetable, herb and flower varieties are grown each year. It says staff gardeners sow and weed the trials by hand, as a home gardener would, without chemical crop protection, and judge each variety for trueness to type, typical appearance and flavour, comparing new introductions with varieties already in the range. Visits to the garden can be arranged in summer.

Seed houses and their names.

The seven brands in this group are all garden seed names: Park Seed, Select Seeds, Johnsons Seeds, Kiepenkerl, Sperli, Higgledy Garden and Seedaholic. Seed brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from family firms that still carry a founder’s name to names that now belong to larger horticultural groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a garden centre rack to a mail-order catalogue or a website.

A seed brand’s identity is usually carried less by the seed itself than by a packet, a catalogue and a name, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its packing or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its seed is packed and sent from.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where it packs and ships its seed and how its packets and catalogues have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Kiepenkerl

A travelling trader and a single blue.

The name comes from Westphalian folk history. German Wikipedia describes the Kiepenkerle as itinerant traders of the Low German-speaking region between the Sauerland and Hamburg, who carried eggs, dairy produce and poultry into the towns and took salt, other goods and news back to the countryside, all in a Kiepe, a back-basket of wood and wickerwork. Their traditional dress, the same article says, included a blue linen smock, a peaked cap, a pipe and a walking stick. Münster has had a Kiepenkerl monument in its Kiepenkerl quarter since 1896; the bronze copy made after the original was destroyed in the Second World War was unveiled in 1953 by Federal President Theodor Heuss.

Nebelung presents the figure as a forerunner of its own trade. The company says the Kiepenkerl, once known as a travelling salesman, set a tradition of trustworthy, knowledgeable advice to customers, and that as its brand symbol he stands for reliability and first-class advice. The brand’s line is “Aus Freude am Gärtnern” — for the joy of gardening — and the company names one colour as its recognition device: Kiepenkerl blue, which it says appears on every seed packet, lawn-seed pack and bulb package. No official value for that blue is published.

The company also sets out what the brand should stand for. On the Kiepenkerl website it lists three core values — lively, experienced and joy — and describes them as the basis of all its brand activity and of how it wants the brand to be recognised by gardeners. Its brand manager, Lars Machnik, is quoted there saying that the traditional brand stands for competence and quality, for proven products and the newest trends, and that gardening should be fun. The name is not exclusive to seed: German Wikipedia also lists Kiepenkerl as a tobacco brand of the Oldenkott company and as the name of a local radio station in the Coesfeld district, both unrelated to Nebelung.

For a design guide, Kiepenkerl shows how a regional folk figure and one consistently applied colour can carry a family seed company across seed packets, lawn-seed packs and bulb packages for a century. Compare it with its Everswinkel stablemate SPERLI and with the biodynamic Bingenheimer Saatgut. For this guide we use packet blue, smock blue and wicker brown with a friendly sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
