Two cousins in Jackson

A West Tennessee start in home accessories.

Kirkland’s began in West Tennessee. English Wikipedia says the company was founded in 1966 in Jackson, Tennessee, by Carl Kirkland and Robert Kirkland, when the two began selling home accessories at low prices. That idea — decorative goods for the home, priced for everyday shoppers rather than for special occasions — is the thread that runs through the rest of the company’s history, from its first shop to the stores that carried the name into the 2020s.

The name is the family name. Kirkland’s took its brand directly from its founders, and the company later traded as Kirkland’s Home, the trade name English Wikipedia gives for the chain. The name is easy to confuse with something unrelated: Kirkland Signature is the private label of the warehouse club Costco, and English Wikipedia notes the distinction at the top of its Kirkland’s article. The Tennessee retailer and the Costco label share a word and nothing else, and a design reference should keep the two apart.

The founders’ influence reached beyond the stores. English Wikipedia says Robert Kirkland was the main funder of Discovery Park of America, a museum and park in Union City, Tennessee, citing the Nashville Business Journal in 2018. The company itself, as Wikipedia describes it, built a programme of community work around its shop floor, including events and promotions in support of Camp Charley, a camp for critically ill children in Scottsville, Kentucky, and earlier projects linked to the television series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and a holiday music CD sold in aid of Habitat for Humanity.

The business moved its base from Jackson towards Nashville. English Wikipedia places the company’s headquarters in Brentwood, Tennessee, in the Nashville area, and Kirkland’s own press release of 17 June 2025 carried a Nashville dateline.

A specialty retailer of home décor.

The merchandise has stayed close to the original idea. English Wikipedia describes Kirkland’s as an American chain that sells home décor, furniture, textiles, accessories and gifts, with an e-commerce website alongside its stores. In its own words, in the “About” paragraph of its press release of 17 June 2025, Kirkland’s, Inc. called itself “a specialty retailer of home décor and furnishings in the United States”.

Leadership changed in 2024. English Wikipedia says that in February 2024 Kirkland’s announced that Amy Sullivan would replace Steve Woodward as chief executive. Sullivan led the company through the series of agreements that followed, and Retail Dive reported in June 2025 that her title would become chief executive and chief merchant and creative officer of the renamed company, with brand and functional leaders reporting to her.

The partnership that reshaped the company began that autumn. Retail Dive reported on 17 June 2025 that Kirkland’s and Beyond, Inc., the online retailer behind the Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock and buybuy Baby names, had formed a strategic partnership in October 2024, when Beyond provided debt financing. The same report said that in May 2025 Beyond acquired Kirkland’s intellectual property, and that Kirkland’s Home stores were to be converted to Bed Bath & Beyond Home stores, beginning with a shop in Brentwood, Tennessee, planned for August 2025.

For the brand, that meant one operator running several names. The June 2025 release was subtitled “Accelerating Brand Conversions Utilizing Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, buybuy Baby”. Compare the earlier history of the Bed Bath & Beyond name in our Bed Bath & Beyond brand guidelines.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group are American home-goods store chains: retailers that fill their shelves with decorative objects, furniture, linens, kitchenware and seasonal pieces, sometimes made to their own specification and sometimes bought from other makers. Some sell at full price under a house name; others buy surplus stock and resell it at a discount, so the goods change from week to week. Between those two models sit chains that mix their own lines with branded stock.

For a chain like this, the visual identity sits mostly outside the products. It lives in the sign above the entrance, the printed circular or catalogue, the price tickets and shopping bags, and the way aisles and displays are arranged. Because such chains are regularly sold, merged, restructured or closed, the history behind each sign deserves a plain account: who founded the business and where, which companies have owned it since, and what became of its stores.

Each guide keeps what independent, dated sources record apart from what a company says about itself, follows its ownership and store history over time, and says clearly where a claim rests only on the company’s own account.

Kirkland’s

A new corporate name, then a new owner.

The corporate name changed in 2025. Kirkland’s, Inc. announced on 17 June 2025, in a release headed “Kirkland’s, Inc. to Rebrand as The Brand House Collective, Inc.”, that it planned to change its name to The Brand House Collective and its stock ticker from KIRK to TBHC, subject to shareholder approval at its annual meeting on 24 July 2025. A symbol-conversion memo issued by the options exchange BOX on 28 July 2025 recorded that the name and trading symbol change took effect at the opening of business on 29 July 2025. The store brand, Kirkland’s Home, sat inside that renamed company.

The brand and the company then passed to Bed Bath & Beyond. English Wikipedia says that on 15 September 2025 Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. announced that it had completed the acquisition of the Kirkland’s Home brand and certain related assets. A Form 8-K filed by Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. and dated 2 April 2026 states that the company completed its acquisition of The Brand House Collective that day, under a merger agreement dated 24 November 2025, with The Brand House Collective surviving as a wholly owned subsidiary. English Wikipedia says the Brand House Collective’s shareholders approved the merger on 17 March 2026. Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. has owned the company since 2026.

For a design guide, Kirkland’s shows how a founder’s surname can work as a retail brand for decades and then become one name among several inside a larger group: the Kirkland’s Home name, a corporate rename to The Brand House Collective and a new parent all arrived within two years. Compare the American home retailers in our Bed Bath & Beyond brand guidelines and our TJ Maxx brand guidelines. For this guide we use walnut, antique gold and sage with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
