Målerås Brand Guidelines
The relief crystal.
Aa
Two constants: a forest-and-amber palette and a Nordic sans register. Abstract homage — not the Målerås crystal or packaging.
The relief crystal
Målerås carves wildlife into clear crystal.
Målerås is a lesson in a technique as identity. Founded in 1890 by Gustaf Holmqvist in the village of Målerås, in the Småland glass district — Sweden’s “Kingdom of Crystal” — it has grown into a house defined by carving.
Its identity is engraved and cast relief crystal. Målerås is best known for deep-relief wildlife and nature sculptures in clear crystal — the signature of designer Mats Jonasson, whose company has led the works since 1987 — alongside coloured art glass and functional glassware, all handmade in Sweden. The relief carving is the brand. Nature, cut into crystal.
(Honest notes: the glassworks was founded in 1890 by Gustaf Holmqvist — not by Mats Jonasson, whose era began in 1987, so we don’t conflate the two. It’s handmade in Sweden (the brand says so on-site). Specific animals are illustrative rather than a fixed catalogue, and beyond “Mats Jonasson Målerås” and the “Spirit” sub-brand we keep line names generic. There’s no official brand hex, so these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Målerås lives in a forest-and-amber palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Målerås’ identity is carved, natural and Swedish — a forest green, an ink, a crystal grey, a relief amber, and a chalk. The palette pairs a forest green with a relief amber — the register of clear crystal carved with nature. It signals craft and landscape rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a forest green with a relief amber signals a relief-crystal house. Målerås’ world is a clear crystal with nature cut into it. For designers, it is a reminder that a single technique — deep-relief engraving — can be a whole identity. The takeaways: make the technique the identity; keep the crystal clear; credit the designer (Jonasson); and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a Nordic sans — clear, natural, Swedish.
Målerås’ identity carries a clear, natural, Swedish spirit — a carved, clear crystal. A clean Nordic sans captures the mood: it is legible and considered, the register of Swedish craft. Set in a forest-and-amber palette, the Nordic sans feels clear and natural — exactly the personality Målerås carries. It is grounded rather than ornate, mirroring relief crystal. (Målerås’ real crystal and monogram wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a Nordic sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: clear, natural and Swedish.

A technique as identity
Målerås stands for engraved relief-crystal wildlife.
Målerås is a lesson in making a technique the identity. A forest-and-amber palette, a Nordic sans and a carved, clear crystal make relief engraving the whole brand — clear, natural, Swedish. The technique is the differentiator. The differentiator is deep-relief wildlife cut into crystal.
For designers and brand-builders, Målerås offers a clear takeaway: let one technique define the brand. The lessons: make the technique the identity; keep the crystal clear; credit the designer; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it was founded in 1890 by Gustaf Holmqvist (not Mats Jonasson, whose era began in 1987), it’s handmade in the Swedish Glasriket, and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. Målerås made a technique the brand — proof that carving can be the difference.
