The design rug
GAN turns craft rugs into contemporary design.
GAN is a lesson in craft directed by design. GAN is the rugs-and-textiles brand of Spain’s Gandia Blasco Group — a company whose roots run to 1941 in the textile industry — and it was established as a rug brand in 2008, based in the Valencia region.
Its identity is design-led rugs. GAN makes rugs and textile home accessories — poufs and seating, tapestries and cushions — using hand-knotting, kilim, hand-loom, embroidery and hand-tufting, hand-made by artisan partners in India. Its collections come from a roster of contemporary designers: Patricia Urquiola (Mangas, Bandas), Charlotte Lancelot, Raw-Edges (Backstitch), MUT Design and Sandra Figuerola. Craft, made contemporary.
(Honest notes: GAN is the rug brand of the Gandia Blasco Group — distinct from GANDIABLASCO, the group’s furniture brand — so we frame it accordingly; the parent dates to 1941 (in textiles) and GAN launched in 2008. Its rugs are designed in Spain but hand-made by artisan partners in India, not Spain — a central part of the story. To keep attributions right: “Rustic Chic” is by Sandra Figuerola (not Urquiola), and Nani Marquina is not a GAN collaborator (she runs the separate Barcelona house Nanimarquina). There’s no official brand hex, and we reproduce no actual rug design — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
GAN lives in a terracotta-and-teal palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
GAN’s identity is warm, crafted and Spanish — a terracotta, an ink, a teal, an ochre, and a chalk. The palette pairs a terracotta with a teal — the register of contemporary Mediterranean rug design. It signals craft and colour rather than novelty. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these tones are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party values.
The lesson is a terracotta with a teal signals a design-rug house. GAN’s world is a hand-woven rug that reads as contemporary design. For designers, it is a reminder that traditional craft, directed by great designers, can be a modern identity. Because a warm terracotta can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: pair craft with design; commission the designers; honour the makers; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a contemporary sans — warm, crafted, Spanish.
GAN’s identity carries a warm, crafted, Spanish spirit — a hand-woven design rug. A clean contemporary sans captures the mood: it is modern and confident, the register of a design-led house. Set in a terracotta-and-teal palette, the contemporary sans feels warm and crafted — exactly the personality GAN carries. It is designed rather than merely decorative, mirroring craft-meets-design rugs. (GAN’s real rugs, patterns and wordmark are works we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a contemporary sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the brand: warm, crafted and Spanish.

Craft directed by design
GAN stands for design rugs, woven in India.
GAN is a lesson in directing craft with design. A terracotta-and-teal palette, a contemporary sans and a hand-woven rug make craft-meets-design the whole brand — warm, crafted, Spanish. The design is the differentiator. The differentiator is traditional craft directed by contemporary designers.
For designers and brand-builders, GAN offers a clear takeaway: direct a craft with great design. The lessons: pair craft with design; commission the designers; honour the makers; and be honest about the story. It is also a reminder to stay accurate: it’s the rug brand of Spain’s Gandia Blasco Group (launched 2008), hand-woven by artisan partners in India, with “Rustic Chic” by Sandra Figuerola — and the palette here is an unofficial interpretation. GAN made craft contemporary — proof that directed craft can be the difference.
