A web address that began as Frontgate

A home and seasonal-décor brand inside a family of American catalogue retailers.

Grandin Road is an American home-furnishings brand that sells furniture, accents and seasonal decoration through its own website and catalogue. Its parent company dates it to 2003. The careers site of QVC Group, which owns the brand today, says that “since 2003, Grandin Road has delivered distinct, well-crafted home furniture and décor,” and it presents the business under the line “The joy of home.” The same page says the brand wants to help customers create a warm and welcoming home for every season, combining design with value.

The early web record fits that date. The Internet Archive holds captures of grandinroad.com from February 2003, when the address showed a page under construction. A capture from March 2003 carries the page title “Frontgate,” the name of the outdoor-living and home catalogue that was already part of the same group. Grandin Road and Frontgate still sit side by side in the same corporate family.

That family is Cornerstone Brands, a group of home and apparel catalogue retailers. QVC Group’s newsroom describes Cornerstone today as the home of Ballard Designs, Frontgate, Grandin Road and Garnet Hill. Each brand runs its own e-commerce site and mails its own catalogue, while a shared-services team supports them with technology, distribution, retail operations, transport and logistics. The newsroom page names fulfilment centres in West Chester and Monroe, Ohio, and in Goodyear, Arizona.

In its own description Grandin Road focuses on bringing cheerful touches to the home through furnishings, accents and seasonal décor, “from everyday to Christmas.” That calendar-led range is the brand’s clearest point of difference within the group.

From a private catalogue group to a television-shopping empire.

Grandin Road’s ownership follows the history of Cornerstone Brands. On 1 March 2005 the trade publication Internet Retailer reported that IAC/InterActiveCorp, the internet company that was then the parent of the television retailer HSN, had agreed to buy Cornerstone Brands. The catalogues named in that report were Ballard Designs, Frontgate, Garnet Hill, Smith + Noble, The Territory Ahead and TravelSmith.

HSN then became a separately listed company. English Wikipedia says that its chief executive, Mindy Grossman, took HSN public in 2008, and the listed business, HSN, Inc., carried Cornerstone with it. In 2017 HSN was bought by its rival. English Wikipedia records that on 6 July 2017 Liberty Interactive, which already held a stake in HSN, announced an all-stock deal to buy the rest of the company, a transaction reported at the time by The Wall Street Journal, CNBC and CNN. A press release filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and dated 29 December 2017 announced that Liberty Interactive, the owner of QVC, had completed its acquisition of HSN, Inc. The release said that HSN and the Cornerstone portfolio would continue to operate as separate brands, and it named Claire Spofford, formerly president of Garnet Hill, as president of Cornerstone.

The parent company has since changed its name twice. English Wikipedia says Liberty Interactive announced on 1 March 2018 that it would rename itself Qurate Retail Group, and that Qurate Retail became QVC Group in February 2025. QVC Group has therefore owned Grandin Road, through HSN and Cornerstone, since the end of 2017, and its newsroom lists the brand alongside QVC, HSN and the other Cornerstone titles. Wikipedia gives QVC Group’s headquarters as Englewood, Colorado, and says HSN announced in January 2025 that it would close its St. Petersburg, Florida, headquarters and move to West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Through these changes the brand has kept its own name, website and catalogue. The corporate pages treat Grandin Road as a distinct consumer brand rather than a QVC or HSN label: its products are sold at grandinroad.com and it has its own careers profile.

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group sell furniture and home goods mainly at a distance, through printed catalogues, websites or both. Some started as mail-order businesses that posted catalogues to customers’ homes; others began online and never printed a catalogue at all. Several belong to larger retail groups, and a single company can run more than one of these names side by side, each aimed at a different taste or budget.

Because the customer usually meets the brand before seeing any product in person, a distance retailer’s identity is carried largely by its name, its photography, its catalogue or website layout and, more recently, by the physical stores that some of these businesses have begun to open. That makes the plain questions behind each name worth asking: who started it, who owns it now, and who actually makes what it sells.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time and how its look has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Grandin Road

A catalogue organised around the calendar.

The most recognisable part of Grandin Road’s identity is seasonal. QVC Group’s newsroom singles out the brand’s Halloween Haven collection, which it describes as a well-known source of spooky indoor and outdoor décor, and it frames the rest of the range as running from everyday furnishings to Christmas.

That structure gives the brand two registers. One is the everyday home, with furniture and accents described in the warm language of the careers page, which speaks of customers who love the joy of creating their happiest home, full of warmth and made to welcome others. The other is seasonal, with holiday decoration for indoors and outdoors. The tagline “The joy of home” sits over both.

Grandin Road also shares a visual heritage with its sister brands. Frontgate, Ballard Designs and Garnet Hill are all catalogue businesses, and Cornerstone’s shared services handle the distribution and logistics behind them. QVC Group’s newsroom says the Cornerstone shared-services team also runs the group’s retail operations and project work, so the brands share technology, warehouses and transport while keeping their own names, websites and catalogues.

For a design guide, Grandin Road shows how a catalogue retailer can build an identity around the calendar, with holiday collections giving each season its own look. Compare Frontgate, the sister catalogue it grew alongside, and Ballard Designs, another Cornerstone title. For this guide we use evergreen, harvest orange and linen with a serif, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
