From Polo to the Pack

A Ralph Lauren designer, a golfer friend and a daughter’s name.

Greyson Clothiers was founded in 2015 by Charlie Schaefer, who co-founded it with his longtime friend Morgan Hoffmann, a former world No. 1 amateur golfer, according to a 2023 profile in Golf.com. Schaefer, a Detroit native, played on the Duke University golf team from 1998 to 2001. He then took a job on the sales floor of a Polo Ralph Lauren store, where, Golf.com reported, Ralph Lauren noticed him and placed him in the company’s corporate development programme; he later became a senior vice-president at Polo. “Mr. Lauren really took me under his wing,” he told the magazine.

The trade site FashionUnited, reporting in February 2025, described Schaefer as a former Ralph Lauren executive with more than 13 years of design experience there, and the company’s founder and chief executive. Greyson’s own website tells the same story in its own words: the brand was “born out of founder Charlie Schaefer’s deep desire to create a brand of clothing that he would wear,” and set out to become “a legacy to his children.”

The name is a family one. The website says the brand takes its name from Greyson, Schaefer’s first-born daughter, and that his second daughter, Scarlett, is also its inspiration. The company is headquartered in Detroit, according to a January 2025 announcement from the Detroit Auto Show and the FashionUnited report.

Colour

A wolf for a logo and a pack for a community.

Greyson’s identity is built on one animal. “The brand has built an entire identity around their wolf logo and pack mentality,” Golf.com wrote in April 2023. The company’s website says it was built “with the principles of the wolf at the helm,” and describes a team founded on “camaraderie, loyalty, strength, and community.” The vocabulary runs through everything it sells: customers and ambassadors are “the Pack,” sponsored professionals are “Pack Leaders,” and the paid top tier of its Members Only programme is called the Black Wolf Membership.

The wolf is used as a character as well as a mark. For the 2023 Masters, Golf.com previewed a “Spectator Wolf” capsule in which the logo animal appears as a patron in a green-and-white bucket hat and sunglasses, alongside a limited-edition print with abstract floral references to Augusta National; the capsule was sold exclusively through Golf.com, and some pieces were open only to Greyson members.

The clothes aim at the meeting point of sport and fashion. Greyson says it set out to show that “sport, tailored fashion, and functionality” can coexist, and calls “the juxtaposition of technical performance and refined sophistication” the core of the brand. Golf.com described the result as “high-quality, boldly colorful, fashion-forward athleisure suitable for on or off the course,” and singled out its joggers. The range now covers men’s and women’s golf and tennis clothing, youth sizes, and licensed collections for the NFL and Major League Baseball, according to its website.

On manufacturing, the company says little in public; some product listings on its website are marked “Made in Peru.”

Golf apparel and its identities.

The seven brands in this group are all golf clothing names: Peter Millar, TravisMathew, Greyson, Holderness & Bourne, J.Lindeberg, Galvin Green and Linksoul. Five are American and two, J.Lindeberg and Galvin Green, are Swedish. Golf apparel brands sit at many different points in the trade, from founder-run labels that still carry a founder’s name or story to brands that now belong to larger golf, fashion or investment groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a club’s pro shop to a city department store.

A golf clothing brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single garment than by a name, a small logo on a chest or a cap, and the kind of player it promises to dress, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its design studio or grown far beyond the place where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its clothing is designed and made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its clothing is made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Greyson Clothiers

Players, teams and a home city.

Greyson has grown through athletes and partnerships. In 2023 Golf.com named its ambassadors as Justin Thomas, who was also an investor, Matt Fitzpatrick, Erik van Rooyen and Sam Ryder, and said Luke Donald had been an early adopter; a quotation from Donald still appears on the company’s website. In early 2025 LIV Golf announced that Greyson had become the official apparel sponsor of two of its teams: Legion XIII, captained by Jon Rahm, under a multi-year deal that put the whole team in “head-to-toe Greyson apparel, including custom polos, outerwear, and pants,” and Ripper GC, the Australian team captained by Cam Smith, for the 2025 season. “We are honored to welcome Ripper GC into the Greyson pack,” Schaefer said in the announcement.

The company remains founder-led. In February 2025 FashionUnited reported a growth-capital round led by NewBound Ventures and Chris Koch, chief executive of New Era, with Tom Nolan of Kendra Scott and David Chu, the founder of Nautica, also taking part; Nolan, Chu and NewBound’s Michael Hoffman were to join the board. The report listed investors from sport and music, including Justin Timberlake, the Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin, Larry Fitzgerald and Eric Church, and named Greyson stores in Denver, West Palm Beach, New York, New Orleans and Atlanta — up from the three shops Golf.com counted in 2023. The new money, the report said, was meant to take the brand abroad, open more shops and build both its direct and wholesale business, after the recent addition of womenswear.

Detroit is part of the story it tells. In January 2025 the Detroit Auto Show sold a limited “Motor City Collection” made with Greyson in tonal black-on-black, with a custom hat station across from the General Motors display.

For a design guide, Greyson Clothiers shows how a single animal can carry a whole brand, from a logo to a membership tier. Compare TravisMathew, another golf label that moves between course and street, and Peter Millar. For this guide we use black, slate and wolf grey with a touch of ember and a condensed sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
