A miller’s maize meal

A Johannesburg milling business and a staple brand.

Iwisa is a maize-meal brand, sold in South Africa, where maize porridge is known as pap. It belongs to Premier FMCG, the food and household-goods company headquartered in Waterfall City, Midrand, just north of Johannesburg. Premier’s own brand page, as archived in 2015 and again in 2018, calls Iwisa “an iconic brand that has been with us since 1956” and describes it as “trusted by generations, for generations.” That founding year is the company’s own account; the circumstances of the launch are not set out on the page.

The word itself predates the brand. English Wikipedia notes that among the Zulu people the knobkerrie, the traditional wooden club with a heavy knob at one end, is known as an iwisa.

The company behind the brand is far older. English Wikipedia says Premier Milling Company was established in 1913 by Joffe Marks as the successor to Marks & Co, a business founded in 1890 that began with a single mill at Fordsburg in Johannesburg and soon added flour and maize mills in Newtown. Premier’s historical timeline, as archived in 2018, records the 1913 merger of Marks & Co with the Premier Roller flour mills to form Premier Milling, a Newtown mill in 1916 and a Kroonstad mill in 1952. Marks and his nephews of the Jaffee and Bloom families went on to diversify the business well beyond milling, Wikipedia says.

Through the 20th century the milling group grew by merger. In 1964 Premier Milling joined with the South African Milling Company, the Port Elizabeth business behind Snowflake flour, and Wikipedia says a controlling interest in Premier passed from the Jaffee and Bloom families to the British group Associated British Foods in the mid-1960s. Premier’s timeline then records the formation of Premier Food Industries in 1984, its purchase in 1998 by General Food Industries (Genfood) and the merger of the two into Premier Foods, and the arrival in 2004 of the Foundation for African Business and Consumer Services (FABCOS) as controlling shareholder.

A shirt sponsor and a soccer spectacular.

Much of Iwisa’s public profile was built through football. English Wikipedia, citing the Football Kit Archive, lists Iwisa as the shirt sponsor of Kaizer Chiefs, from 1990 to 1993 and again from 1994 to 1997; United Bank took the shirts for the season in between.

The brand’s name was also on a tournament. English Wikipedia says the annual one-day competition later known as the Telkom Charity Cup began in 1986 as the Iwisa Maize Meal Soccer Spectacular and kept that name until 1998, before becoming the Charity Spectacular from 1999 and the Telkom Charity Cup from 2007; the Premier Soccer League discontinued it in 2011. In its format, the public voted by telephone for their favourite clubs, and the four teams with the most votes qualified to play.

The first Spectaculars were staged at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, and from 1990 the tournament moved to Soccer City, Wikipedia’s list of winners shows. Kaizer Chiefs won the first five editions, from 1986 to 1990; Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates were among the later winners while the Iwisa name was attached.

On the shelf, Iwisa covers more than one kind of meal. Premier’s brand page, as archived in 2015 and 2018, listed Iwisa Super Maize Meal, Iwisa Samp (dried maize kernels cooked much like rice), Iwisa Maize Rice and Iwisa Braai Pap, among other products, and the 2018 page linked to an Iwisa breakfast range. Premier’s brand list, as summarised by English Wikipedia in 2026, places Iwisa under both maize and beverages, alongside the company’s other maize brands such as Nyala, Invicta and Super Sun.

Design and documentation.

The seven brands in this group are all food and drink brands, and all of them come from South Africa: Mrs Ball’s, Ouma, Jungle Oats, All Gold, Five Roses, Joko and Iwisa. South African food and drink brands in general sit at many different points in the trade, from names that still carry a founder’s or a family’s story to names that now belong to much larger food groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a corner shop to a supermarket shelf.

A food or drink brand’s identity is usually carried less by a single product than by a pack, a name and the meal or cup it promises, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its factory or grown far beyond the town where it started. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its products are actually made and packed.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its packaging has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Iwisa

Brait, a cancelled listing and a listed Premier.

Iwisa’s owner has changed hands several times in the past two decades. Premier’s timeline and English Wikipedia both record that in 2011 the investment group Brait became Premier Foods’ strategic long-term shareholder. Under Brait the business grew by acquisition: in 2012 it bought a controlling stake in bakeries in Eswatini, in 2013 it acquired Manhattan confectionery and Lil-lets in South Africa and the UK, in 2015 it bought the Mozambican food producer Companhia Industrial da Matola, and in 2021 it added the confectioner Mister Sweet, Wikipedia says. Premier’s timeline records a move of its corporate office to Waterfall City in July 2014, and the launch of a new Premier identity at the same time.

The route to the stock market was not straight. Moneyweb reported in December 2022 that Brait had called off a planned JSE listing of Premier days before its scheduled date of 8 December, citing capital markets that were not conducive to a successful offer; the report named Iwisa maize meal among Premier’s best-known brands, alongside Blue Ribbon bread and Snowflake. Business Day reported on 3 March 2023 that the offer might be back on after investors approached the company, and Premier Group Limited listed on the JSE in March 2023, according to the company and English Wikipedia.

Brait describes Premier as operating three maize mills, alongside seven wheat mills and 13 bakeries, with distribution depots in South Africa, Eswatini, Mozambique and Lesotho. In January 2026 Premier announced its intention to acquire the South African food manufacturer RFG, and later that month the Competition Commission recommended that the deal be approved with conditions, BusinessTech reported.

For a design guide, Iwisa shows how a staple maize meal can carry a name onto football shirts and a stadium tournament as well as a kitchen shelf. Compare Maseca, Gruma’s corn flour from Mexico, and Jungle Oats, another South African breakfast staple. For this guide we use mealie red, maize yellow and a field green with a heavy grotesque sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
