Adel Brand Guidelines
Turkey’s pencil.
Aa
Two constants: a Turkish-blue palette and a modern-sans register. Abstract homage — not an Adel colour, label, barrel or Faber-Castell mark.
Turkey’s pencil
Adel is Turkey’s leading pencil maker, an Anadolu Group company that makes its own Adel brand and produces Faber-Castell in Turkey.
Adel is a lesson in how a national maker can be both a brand and a partner. Turkey’s leading pencil and stationery maker, Adel makes its own Adel-brand pencils, coloured pencils and school supplies, and — under a long partnership — manufactures and distributes Faber-Castell products in Turkey. Its answer to how a pencil is made a business is dual: build a strong home brand, and be the trusted local maker for a great German house. A pencil maker that is both national champion and partner.
Its identity is the Turkish pencil maker. Adel’s own-brand pencils and coloured pencils, and its role producing Faber-Castell locally, are the work it is known for. A core, made in Turkey. A national maker with a global partner.
(Honest notes, so the story stays precise, because the ownership is easy to get wrong. Adel Kalemcilik is a Turkish company, listed on Borsa Istanbul, manufacturing in Turkey — its main plant is at Çayırova, in Kocaeli, near Istanbul, with an older plant at Kartal. On ownership: it is majority-owned by Turkey’s Anadolu Group (around 57%), with Faber-Castell holding only a minority stake (around 15%) since 1995 — so it is not a Faber-Castell joint venture or subsidiary, and it was not founded by Faber-Castell; it is an Anadolu Group company in which Faber-Castell is a minority partner. It was established in the late 1960s, with production from around 1970, so we date it loosely rather than to a single disputed year. Its role is dual: its own Adel brand, plus manufacturing and distributing Faber-Castell in Turkey. Crucially, Faber-Castell’s intellectual property — its name, its jousting-knights logo, its Castell 9000 trade dress — is separate and protected, and we never reproduce it, even though Adel makes those products locally. Adel’s own name and labels are its IP, described but never reproduced, and there is no official brand hex — these tones are an unofficial interpretation. This is design commentary and does not promote any product.)
Colour
Adel lives in a Turkish-blue palette. Click a swatch to copy the hex.
Adel’s identity is modern, solid and Turkish — a Turkish blue, an ink, a slate, a navy, and a paper. The palette leans Turkish blue and slate: the register of a large, capable national maker and a modern factory. It signals capability and scale over prestige. The honest caveat: with no published brand hex, these values are an original, unofficial interpretation, not first-party colours.
The lesson is a Turkish-blue palette signals a national-maker, partner identity. Adel’s world is a capable, large-scale, Turkish-made object. For designers, it is a reminder that a deep blue and a cool slate can carry a brand built on being a country’s pencil maker — the blue of a dependable everyday pencil and the grey of a modern plant. Because these tones can fail as small text, keep type dark and let the colour live in the accents, palette and band. The takeaways: build the home brand; be a trusted partner; keep the two IPs separate; and treat any single hex as unofficial.
Typography
The register is a modern sans — capable, clean, industrial.
Adel’s identity carries a capable, clean, industrial spirit — a large national maker, not a boutique. A modern sans captures the mood: solid, even and businesslike, the register of a listed manufacturer. Set in a Turkish-blue palette, the modern sans feels capable and clean — exactly the personality Adel carries. It is industrial rather than ornate, mirroring a high-volume national pencil. (Adel’s real labels and marks are things we describe but do not reproduce, and the exact typeface is not ours to use.) Because it is not ours to use, the honest description is “a modern-sans spirit,” shown here in a stand-in. The type behaves like the house: capable, clean and industrial.

The national pencil
Adel stands for the national maker, honestly partnered.
Adel is a lesson in how a national maker can be a brand and a partner at once. A Turkish-blue palette, a modern sans and a high-volume core make one thing — Turkey’s own pencil, and the local maker of a global one — the whole house: modern, solid and Turkish. The dual role is the differentiator, and the honest ownership is the meaning. The point is a listed Turkish manufacturer, majority-owned at home, that builds its own Adel brand while producing Faber-Castell locally under a minority partnership.
Put to work, the identity is a dual role, honestly told, as design. A pencil house in this spirit would build a strong national brand, be a reliable manufacturing partner for a global house, and be scrupulously clear about what it owns and what it merely makes under partnership. A brand learning from it would see that being a national champion and a trusted partner is a durable identity — that scale, a listing and a home market give it a base a boutique lacks — and that being precise, an Anadolu Group company with Faber-Castell as a minority partner since 1995, not a Faber-Castell subsidiary, keeps the story honest. A brand learning from it would also respect the crucial line between the two brands: making Faber-Castell in Turkey does not make its logo Adel’s to use. The lesson Adel teaches is that a dual role can hold an identity: the home brand gives it a base, and the partnership gives it reach — as long as the ownership is told straight. The clarity is the personality, and the national pencil is the proof.
For designers and brand-builders, Adel holds the national-partner pole in this round of the national pencil, from Turkey: build your own brand, partner honestly, and keep the IPs separate. The lessons: grow the home brand; be a reliable partner; state the ownership precisely; never borrow a partner’s logo; and never reproduce a protected mark. It is also a reminder to stay precise: Adel is Turkey’s leading pencil maker, an Anadolu Group company that makes its own Adel brand and produces Faber-Castell in Turkey — with the palette here an unofficial interpretation. Adel made the dual role the identity — proof that a national maker, honestly partnered, can be the difference.
