Haier Brand Guidelines
A struggling Qingdao fridge factory, a German partner’s name and a brand built one acquisition at a time.

A refrigerator factory in Qingdao
A state-owned plant, a new director in 1984 and a partner from Germany.
Haier is the main brand of Haier Group, the Chinese appliance and electronics company headquartered in Qingdao, Shandong. Haier says on its website that the group was “founded in 1984.” English Wikipedia traces the business further back, to a refrigerator factory built in Qingdao in the 1920s that became a state-owned enterprise after 1949, and describes it as close to bankruptcy by the early 1980s, with dilapidated equipment and little quality control.
The turnaround is tied to one manager. English Wikipedia says the Qingdao city government appointed Zhang Ruimin, then an assistant city manager responsible for several city-owned appliance companies, to run the factory in 1984; its article on Zhang dates his appointment as director to December 1984 and says he served as Haier’s chairman and chief executive from 1984 until 2021. Haier’s own management page now names Zhou Yunjie as chairman of the board and CEO, and says he joined the Qingdao Refrigerator General Factory in July 1988, the year he graduated.
The best-known story from those early years is about quality. English Wikipedia says that in 1985, after a customer complaint, Zhang had defective refrigerators destroyed with sledgehammers to change the factory’s attitude to quality, and Haier’s own history refers to the episode as the “smashing fridges” incident when it recalls Zhang discussing it in a television interview. The company’s history page frames 1984 to 1991 as its “brand building” stage, with the motto “High-quality products are made by people with high-competence.”

From Qindao-Liebherr to a group of appliance brands.
The name itself comes from a partner. English Wikipedia says the business was founded as Qingdao Refrigerator Co. in 1984 and entered a joint-venture contract with the German refrigerator maker Liebherr, which supplied technology and equipment. Refrigerators were made under the name Qindao-Liebherr, and the brand name Haier came from the last two syllables of the Chinese transliteration of Liebherr, lìbó hǎi’ěr. The same article says the city later asked the company to take over other struggling appliance makers, starting with a microwave-oven maker in 1988; the business was renamed Qingdao Haier Group in 1991 and shortened to Haier in 1992, and it took over the washing-machine maker Qingdao Red Star Electronics in 1995.
International growth followed. English Wikipedia says Haier entered the US market in 1999 with compact refrigerators and wine cellars and opened a factory in Camden, South Carolina, in 2000. It says Haier formed a product-development alliance with Sanyo Electric in 2007 and, after acquiring Sanyo’s relevant appliance operations in 2012, launched the AQUA brand alongside Haier.
Three acquisitions brought well-known Western names into the group, and Haier’s own history page dates each of them. On 6 November 2012 Haier announced it had taken a controlling stake in Fisher & Paykel Appliances Holdings Limited of New Zealand and would begin compulsory acquisition of the whole company under the Takeovers Code. On 7 June 2016 Qingdao Haier and General Electric announced they had signed the documents completing Qingdao Haier’s acquisition of GE Appliances, the Louisville, Kentucky, business. On 8 January 2019 Qingdao Haier and the Italian Fumagalli family announced that the acquisition of Candy S.p.A. was complete and that Candy was now a wholly owned subsidiary. English Wikipedia says the Candy deal was announced on 28 September 2018.
The listed company at the centre of the appliance business is Haier Smart Home. English Wikipedia describes it as the former Qingdao Haier Co., Ltd., listed in Shanghai, and Haier’s history page says its shares began trading in Frankfurt on 24 October 2018, on the China Europe International Exchange. Haier’s website lists its brand portfolio as Haier, Casarte, Leader, GE Appliances, Fisher & Paykel, AQUA and Candy. Each keeps its own name and website, so the Haier badge sits alongside, rather than on top of, the brands the group has bought.

Design and documentation.
The brands in this group all make major appliances for the home: cookers and ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers and laundry machines. European and global appliance brands sit at many different points in the trade, from family companies that still carry a founder’s name to labels that now belong to much larger industrial groups, and a single name can appear on products built in several countries for different markets.
An appliance brand’s identity is usually carried less by one machine than by a badge, a name and the look of a range, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, merged with a rival, been bought by a group abroad or moved its factories over the decades. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its appliances are actually made.
Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its appliances are made and how its marks have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Haier
A borrowed name, a pair of brothers and a family of badges.
Haier’s identity starts with a word that was never meant to be a word. As English Wikipedia tells it, the brand is a fragment of a German family name rendered in Chinese. The company has kept that short form since 1992, when, English Wikipedia says, the group name was simplified to Haier.
The group has also used characters alongside the wordmark. Haier’s history page records that in March 2014 the group invited people online to help create a “new image of Haier brothers,” the cartoon pair associated with the brand in China. That entry is one of the few places where the company talks about its visual identity directly. The specimen and palette on this page are our own interpretation.
The company’s account of its own strategy is set out in stages rather than designs. Its history page divides the years since 1984 into six periods: brand building from 1984, diversification from 1991, internationalisation from 1998, global branding from 2005, networking from 2012 and an “ecosystem brand” stage from 2019. Haier says the sixth stage was announced at a ceremony in Qingdao on 26 December 2019. The management model that Zhang Ruimin promoted, which the company calls Rendanheyi, appears throughout those later entries, alongside the COSMOPlat industrial internet platform launched as a national model platform in February 2018.
For product design the more visible story is the portfolio. Casarte and Leader are names Haier lists for China, AQUA came from the Sanyo deal, and the Western brands kept their own identities after acquisition. Candy came with its own history: English Wikipedia says the Brugherio company acquired Hoover European Appliances Group in 1995, with exclusive rights to the Hoover name across Europe, the Mediterranean and the former USSR, which places the European Hoover brand inside Haier today.
For a design guide, Haier shows how a brand name taken from a partner can become the umbrella for a group that buys other well-known badges and leaves them intact. Compare it with GE Appliances and Fisher & Paykel, both bought by Haier, with Hoover, whose European rights came with Candy, and with Liebherr, the German partner whose name gave Haier its own. For this guide we use blue, cobalt and mist with a rounded sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
