A system, not a single toy

A cat range sorted by what a cat does, under a puzzle-piece mark.

Petlinks is an American cat toy and accessory brand belonging to Worldwise, Inc., the California pet products company that renamed itself PetWise in October 2023. In its earliest web form the brand appeared in lower case as the “petlinks system”. A version of the site at petlinkssystem.com captured by the Internet Archive on 6 December 2006 carried the page title “products to fit your cat’s specific needs” and a copyright line in the name of worldwise, inc. The page asked visitors to look for products “with the petlinks color-coded puzzle piece” at their local pet specialty store, and gave a telephone number for finding a stockist while, it said, the company continued to build its website.

The idea behind the name was set out in the structure of that page. Rather than grouping its goods by material or price, the site sorted them under headings for the needs it said a cat has: Stimulation, Hunt, Independence, Interaction, Exercise, Scratch, Rest and Privacy. The 2006 list was short. It included Mouse Full, a refillable catnip toy; Pure Bliss, which the site described as certified organic catnip; Chirpy Teezer, a bird-sound “toy-for-two”; and iScratch, a refillable scratching system sold with separate inserts. Under Rest and Privacy sat three refillable catnip beds, the Catnip Curlup, Catnip Coverup and Catnip Cubby. At the foot of the page a line announced: “Coming soon…the petlinks system for DOGS.”

The parent company did not start in pets. Supermarket News, in a profile dated 1 January 2018, said Worldwise was formed in 1990 to market environmentally friendly gardening products, and described it then as a San Rafael, California company led by chief executive and president Kevin Fick, who had held those roles since 2012.

A catalogue that grew inside the same eight headings.

By the time the Internet Archive captured petlinkssystem.com again on 18 May 2009, the range had grown considerably while keeping the same framework. Hunt now held electronic and pull-string toys such as Tweet Thing, Parrot Tweet and Maniac Mouse, alongside the earlier Feather Flips balls. Interaction had gained wands named Plume Crazy and Twitchy Tail. Scratch, the longest list, ran from hanging catnip scratchers such as Tube Time and Carpet Clawz to a wavy two-surface scratcher called Dream Curl, a sisal post called Pillar Pawz and an angled scratcher called Claw Climber. Exercise added a laser light toy and a remote-controlled toy, and Rest gained a pet bed called Hush Hour.

Independence, which in 2006 had held only the Solo Swatter, a refillable catnip toy made to hang from a doorknob, now also listed Twinkle Chute, a tunnel toy with lights, and Cuckoo Clock, a motion-activated toy. Exercise opened with Super Swooper, an electronic motion ball, and kept the automated Pure Commotion from the first list. On both captured pages every product name carried a trademark sign and sat beside a plain one-line description of the object, under the eight need-based headings set in capitals.

Worldwise placed the brand mainly with independent and specialty pet retailers. In its 2018 profile, Supermarket News wrote that the specialty channel had embraced Worldwise’s Petlinks brand “to be the pet authority throughout the channel.” The same article said the company used recycled materials such as plastic bottles and corrugated cardboard in its products, and that it had updated its packaging to look “warmer and more inviting.”

Design and documentation.

The brands in this group all make furniture, scratchers, toys or other accessories for cats. Cat accessory brands in general sit at many different points in the pet trade, from small workshops run by their founders to names that now belong to much larger pet companies or investment groups, and a single brand can be sold everywhere from a specialty pet shop to an online marketplace.

A cat accessory brand’s identity is usually carried less by one product than by a name, a mark, its packaging and the way its range is organised and described, because the company behind the name may have changed hands, moved its production or grown well beyond its first workshop or catalogue. That makes the questions behind each name worth asking plainly: who started it, who owns it now, and where its products are actually designed and made.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its products are made and how its range and packaging have changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

Petlinks

One brand inside a California group that changed owners and its own name.

Petlinks was listed as a Worldwise brand in trade reports across two changes of ownership at the parent company. Pet Worldwide, in its sixth issue of 2015, reported that Worldwise had acquired Quaker Pet Group. It described Worldwise as a San Rafael company and a portfolio company of the New York private equity firm Mistral Equity Partners, and listed pet bedding, cat scratchers, cat toys and other accessories under the Petlinks, SmartyKat, TrustyPup and Kathy Ireland Loved Ones brands. It quoted the company’s stated goal: to “develop and manufacture environmentally responsible products that are attractive, affordable and accessible to everyone.”

On 28 September 2021, Pet Insight reported that Alvarez & Marsal Capital Partners, together with the affiliated A&M Capital Opportunities Fund, had acquired Worldwise, then headquartered in Novato, California; the report named Mistral Equity Partners as the company’s majority shareholder. The report gave the company’s founding year as 1990, said Kevin Fick would continue as chief executive, and listed the brands as SmartyKat, TrustyPup, Petlinks, goDog, SHERPA, Guaranteed On-Board, PoochPlanet and Pawscout. On 18 October 2023, in a release published by A&M Capital, Worldwise announced that it had renamed itself PetWise, with A&M Capital Partners named as majority owner.

For a design guide, Petlinks shows a cat range organised around one graphic device, a colour-coded puzzle piece, and a fixed set of need-based headings rather than around a single product. Compare SmartyKat, its sister cat brand at Worldwise, and Catit, the Hagen Group’s cat range. For this guide we use catnip orange, garden green and deep pine with a rounded sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
