Brass levers for Los Angeles

A 1981 start and a founding president.

Emtek is an American maker of door and cabinet hardware based in the City of Industry, in Los Angeles County, California. Its products run from interior knobs and levers to entry sets, deadbolts, hinges, electronic locks and cabinet pulls and knobs. The name has a namesake on the other side of the Pacific: an Indonesian media and technology group, PT Elang Mahkota Teknologi, also trades as Emtek and has nothing to do with door hardware.

English Wikipedia dates the company to 1981 and says it began by making a limited range of solid brass door levers for specialty hardware dealers in the Los Angeles area. The company’s own website, in October 2026, speaks of “over 40 years” of helping people “transform houses into homes,” consistent with that date.

Emtek names its founder on its own site. The “Our Story” page quotes Tom Millar, whom it describes as Emtek’s founding president, now retired, on what he hoped a homeowner would feel when reaching for a door: that it was “more than just another door,” but “a Tuscany-inspired handle or Mid-century modern style that they carefully selected and are proud to display in their home.” The quotation is a fair summary of how the company presents itself — as a supplier of choice and style rather than of a single house look.

Emtek’s range is sold through dealers and showrooms rather than mainly through its own shop, and its website carries a “Where to Buy” finder and a separate area for dealers. The company’s message to homeowners is that the hardware is an expression of personal taste: its story page calls each choice “a statement, your statement,” and describes hardware as “like a handshake from your home” to visitors.

Assembled to order, mixed and matched.

The phrase at the centre of Emtek’s identity is a place name. The company’s website has a page titled “Assembled to Order in Los Angeles,” and the same words appear in its navigation as “Assembled to Order in L.A.” The page explains the model in the company’s own terms: product components are sourced from all over the world and then assembled as customers order them, at a production facility the company says is about twenty minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Its story page credits a team of artisans, engineers and operations staff in Industry, California.

The company’s wording is about assembly in Los Angeles, with the parts sourced worldwide. It presents the arrangement as the reason a buyer can personalise an order — choosing a knob or lever, a rose, an entry-set type and a finish — and still receive it quickly.

The personalisation is the second visual idea. The website invites visitors to design their own Emtek product online, combining styles and finishes, and the “Assembled to Order” page lists the ability to mix and match finishes or styles among the benefits of the model. The result is a catalogue built as a set of interchangeable parts rather than as fixed sets. The site’s menus run from door hardware and cabinet hardware to accessories, bath hardware, door bells and house numbers, with a line called Emtek Select and a Satin Brass finish given places of their own.

The palette here is our own reading of the site’s photography: slate and dark grey grounds, warm satin brass and the off-white of painted doors and plaster.

Design and documentation.

Door hardware and lock brands sit at an unusual point in a house: they are handled every day, yet most people could not name the company that made the knob in their own hand. A single name can cover a decorative lever, a deadbolt, a hinge and a cabinet pull, and it can be sold through builders, architects, showrooms and hardware stores as well as directly to homeowners.

A hardware brand’s identity is usually carried less by a logo than by the objects themselves — the shape of a backplate, the profile of a knob, the names given to finishes and collections — because the company behind the name may have changed hands, merged with sister brands or moved its production since it started. That makes the plain questions worth asking: who started it, who owns it now, and where its hardware is made and finished.

Each guide separates what independent sources record from what the company says about itself — its founding story, its owners over time, where its hardware is made and how its look has changed — and marks plainly what rests only on the company’s own word.

From ASSA ABLOY to Fortune Brands

Two corporate owners and a sister brand.

Emtek has spent most of its life inside larger groups. English Wikipedia lists the Swedish lock group ASSA ABLOY as its owner from 1999 until 2023. Wikipedia also names Schaub hardware as Emtek’s sister brand; the two were sold together in 2023.

The change came out of a much bigger lock deal. ASSA ABLOY was buying Spectrum Brands’ Hardware and Home Improvement division — the business that owns Kwikset and Baldwin — and as part of completing it, ASSA ABLOY divested Emtek and its Smart Residential business in the United States and Canada to Fortune Brands Innovations. Qualified Remodeler reported on 21 June 2023 that Fortune Brands, of Deerfield, Illinois, had completed the acquisition of the Emtek and Schaub door and cabinet hardware business, together with the U.S. and Canadian Yale and August residential smart-lock business. Security Journal Americas confirmed the divestment on 26 June 2023. Fortune Brands Innovations has owned Emtek since 2023.

At Fortune Brands, Emtek joined a group of home brands that Qualified Remodeler listed as including Moen, House of Rohl, Therma-Tru, Fiberon, Master Lock and SentrySafe. The company’s chief executive, Nicholas Fink, said in the announcement that the brands would “expand our offering in the luxury home products market.”

The brand has also been seen in design media. English Wikipedia says Emtek supplied the hardware for the Architectural Digest Oscars Green Room in 2015, working with the Los Angeles design studio Commune.

For a design guide, Emtek shows how a hardware brand can make its production model — parts gathered worldwide, assembled to order in one Los Angeles facility — into the centre of its identity. Compare Baldwin, the forged-brass door hardware brand that stayed with ASSA ABLOY, and Schlage. For this guide we use slate, satin brass and plaster white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
