Penneys

A Mary Street shop and a Weston family venture.

Primark began in Dublin under another name. The first Penneys opened on Mary Street in 1969, founded by Arthur Ryan on behalf of the Weston family, RTÉ News reported on 8 July 2019. In the same report, George Weston, chief executive of Associated British Foods, said that his grandfather Garfield Weston and his uncle Galen Weston had recruited Ryan to run Penneys in 1969, when it had a single store in Dublin. English Wikipedia dates the opening to June 1969, gives the address as 47 Mary Street, names Ryan’s business partner Micaela Mitchell alongside him, and notes that the shop still trades.

The Westons’ business was in food. English Wikipedia says the family had founded Allied Bakeries Limited in 1935, the company later renamed Associated British Foods (ABF), which owns Primark. RTÉ reported that Ryan served as chief executive and chairman of the business, and English Wikipedia says that in July 2009, having led the company since 1969, he retired as chief executive to become chairman, handing the role to the chief operating officer, Paul Marchant.

The chain spread first across Ireland. Wikipedia records the first major shops outside Dublin opening in Cork and Belfast in 1971, both as Penneys, and a shop in Derby in 1973 as the move into Great Britain. By 1974 there were Penneys shops in Scotland and England as well.

In June 1974, after the American retailer JC Penney obtained an injunction in the High Court of England, the shops in England were renamed Primark, after an in-house clothing label the company had introduced early on, English Wikipedia says. From 27 August 1976, under the agreement that settled the matter, the Penneys name was used only in the Republic of Ireland, and shops elsewhere, Northern Ireland included, became Primark. The business has carried both names ever since: Penneys over the door in the Republic, Primark everywhere else.

From Littlewoods to Madrid, Boston and a planned spin-off.

The Primark name went abroad in the 2000s. English Wikipedia says the company bought retail shops from the UK retailer Littlewoods in 2005, keeping some and selling the rest, and opened its first shop in mainland Europe in Madrid in May 2006. The Netherlands followed in December 2008, and Portugal, Germany and Belgium in 2009; Austria in 2012, France in 2013 and Italy in 2014. The first shop in the United States opened in Boston in 2015.

The same year Primark moved into a redeveloped Dublin building, the former Chapel House, renamed Arthur Ryan House, which English Wikipedia gives as its current headquarters. Later openings, as Wikipedia lists them, took the chain into Slovenia in 2019, Poland in 2020, the Czech Republic in 2021, Romania in 2022, Slovakia in 2023 and Hungary in 2024. In May 2025 Primark signed a franchise agreement with the Alshaya Group for shops in Kuwait and Dubai, the Kuwait shop opening in October 2025.

On 24 April 2013 the Rana Plaza building in Bangladesh, which housed a factory producing for Primark and other international brands, collapsed.

The range and the ways of shopping have widened. Wikipedia says Primark began selling makeup from 2014, introduced an online shopping service in November 2022 and launched a mobile app in August 2025. In March 2025 Paul Marchant resigned as chief executive; ABF’s finance director, Eoin Tonge, was appointed interim chief executive and confirmed in the role in March 2026. In April 2026, English Wikipedia records, Associated British Foods announced a plan to spin Primark off as a separate company by late 2027.

Typography

Design and documentation.

A fashion retailer’s identity is met first on the street. The fascia above the shopfront carries the name at a scale meant to be read from across the road, so the wordmark may need to work in illuminated letters, in flat paint and in vinyl on glass. Inside, the same mark returns at a smaller size on till points, fitting-room doors and wayfinding signs, and the colour that sits behind it can be as recognisable as the letters themselves.

The shopping bag leaves the shop with the customer. Paper, plastic or fabric, with twisted or flat handles, a bag carries the name out of the shop and down the street, and its design can be as plain as one colour field, one mark and generous margins.

Swing tags and woven labels do quieter work. The tag carries size, care and code information, but its card weight, colour and typeface also signal which line or sub-brand a garment belongs to.

Window displays change with the seasons. Seasonal schemes, mannequin styling and printed graphics let a retailer refresh its look without touching the fascia, while the logo on the fascia stays the same.

Primark

Two fascias, a re-kerned wordmark and a portal.

The Primark identity has two names. In the Republic of Ireland the same shops trade as Penneys, the name Arthur Ryan opened under in 1969; everywhere else they are Primark, a name taken from the company’s own clothing label after the 1974 injunction and fixed by the 1976 agreement. Both fascias are run by one company from its head office in Dublin.

A refresh of the mark arrived in May 2024. It’s Nice That reported on 22 May 2024 that the rebrand was carried out by Primark’s creative agency, VCCP. The logo changed only slightly: its weights were increased and the lock-up re-kerned “to work better at a small scale in social and digital”, as VCCP put it, in line with a wider type family called Primark Basis, developed by the foundry Colophon as an adapted version of Basis Grotesque. The magazine noted small added curves in the letters, which VCCP said were meant to bring in “playful characters”. English Wikipedia describes the new logo as more curved and bold, based on the company’s 2005 logo, with a slight change of colour.

Colour shifted as well. It’s Nice That said the Primark aqua blue had been refreshed and a new secondary palette introduced to support it, a change VCCP described as “primarily for accessibility purposes”. The rebrand also introduced a framing device VCCP calls a portal: a graphic window made of two oblongs that together form a P and cut away to reveal campaign images. A press release quoted by the magazine described it as a window into the world of Primark for use across campaigns and the wider brand. The new look and the portal were set to run across the assets for Primark’s Viva Summer campaign, the magazine said.

For a design guide, Primark shows how one retailer can carry two names on its shopfronts and still tighten a single wordmark, colour and framing device around them. Compare it with H&M and Zara, two other European clothing retailers. For this guide we use aqua, harbour and bag white with a sans, an unofficial interpretation; no product or logo is reproduced.
